THE ANCIENT OF DAYS

Suggested Reading: Daniel 7-8

Today's reading mentions "a ram" and a "male goat." Here's one of God's creatures from Haiti. Reynold has been there several times to initiate Crosssroads missions projects, particularly after the great natural disasters. The painted horns indicate to all the villagers that this goat is owned by a particular person.

Key Verses: Daniel 7:13-14

I was watching in the night visions,

And behold, One like the Son of Man,

Coming with the clouds of heaven!

He came to the Ancient of Days,

And they brought Him near before Him.

Then to Him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom,

That all peoples, nations, and languages should serve Him.

His dominion is an everlasting dominion,

Which shall not pass away,

And His kingdom the one

Which shall not be destroyed.

Daniel 7 picks up Daniel’s life where chapter 4 leaves us. Nebuchadnezzar is dead and this time it is Daniel who has a dream, which he interprets as a further amplification of the four kingdoms of Nebuchadnezzar’s dream: (1) Babylon (2) Persia (3) Greece (4) Rome. Daniel’s greatest concern is “the fourth beast” (7:19 & 7:23). Daniel saw 10 horns on its head and then a little horn that comes to dominate the others. Scholars who have written on prophecy are almost unanimous in identifying this horn that rises with the Antichrist who rises out of the regions where the Roman Empire once ruled and through its legacy continues to be present (our calendar, the European Union, etc.).

In Daniel 8 the ram and the male goat meet in fierce battle, and the male goat is the victor (Rome defeats Greece about 300 years after Daniel writes this prophecy). The experience was so powerful that this strong man, Daniel, fainted and had to take several days off work.

Jesus took Daniel’s prophecy so seriously that when He stood before the Jewish high priest and ruling council, He quoted Daniel 7:13. Read Matthew 26:62-68! It was obvious to all the rulers that condemned Jesus for blasphemy that Jesus claimed to be the One Daniel called, “The Ancient of Days!” (Daniel 7:9 and 7:13). Daniel prophesied in these chapters of the coming of the One whose “dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away!” This could not possibly be anyone other that the Eternal Almighty God showing Himself in human flesh as the Son of Man and Son of God!!!

PRAYER FOR TODAY:

Lord God, Ancient of Days, Most High, Ruler over the Everlasting Kingdom, I bow before You as one whom You created from the dust of the earth. I’m humbled and, like Daniel, astonished at the greatness of Your Person. I can ask for only one thing in my prayer, “Have Dominion over my life!” I make you my Lord in my surrender to Your dominion. I worship You Father, Son and Holy Spirit! I do this in the Name of Jesus, the One whom we will see “coming in the clouds of Heaven!” Amen!!!

100 PERSONAL WORDS:

I’m aware from the writings of the Jewish historian Josephus of the unspeakable evil of the Greeks, particularly under Antiochus Epiphanes IV, who desecrated the Temple in Jerusalem with what the prophets call “The Abomination of Desolation” (sacrificing a pig on the altar in the Holy of Holies – 175 years before Christ). We are much more aware of the Roman brutalities because of the record of the Gospels. But these horrors will be surpassed by the coming one whom the Scriptures call “the man of sin” or “the Beast” who sets up an image of himself in the Holy of Holies of a rebuilt Temple in Jerusalem, gives it the power to speak (perhaps a hologram image), and anyone who does not worship the image is put to death (Revelation 13:1-9).

To the reader who desires to understand the many prophesies by the prophets, the apostles, and Jesus Himself, I recommend a book by Dr. Mark Hitchcock called The End. He’s been a guest for an entire month on the 100 Huntley Street telecast. Mark takes the complex and make it understandable. Be ready for very serious study and then order Mark’s book from the Crossroads e-store (click here). Also, take the time to watch some of Mark’s teachings from 100 Huntley Street (click here for a series of his teachings you can choose from).

Yours to help us understand the one-third of the Bible which is broadly called “Prophecy.”

David

P.S. I cannot think of the impact of prophecy without mentioning our 100 Huntley Street co-host, Moira Brown. She was a successful television host on CKVR-TV Barrie/Toronto when Hal Lindsay’s book The Late Great Planet Earth was given to her. It was a main factor in convincing her of the reality of God and the reliability of the Bible. Back in the seventies, over 30 million copies of Hal’s book were sold. He often appeared on 100 Huntley Street before I met Moira. I’m suggesting Mark Hitchcock’s new book because many new developments, which confirm the detailed accuracy of Bible prophecy, have happened in the last 40 years since The Late Great Planet Earth was published.

  1. There is much to learn and explore here about prophesy. Thank you for the links and reading material. Blessings and make the best of this new season!

  2. Absolutely incredible scripture from Daniel this morning; mind-blowing prophecy about future events and the Antichrist; links between Daniel, present day rulers; and future studies with Dr. Mark Hitchcock. I hate to say this, because it means our two year study will be at an end–but it will be incredible to study the book of Revelations!! Thanks again, David, for teaching us the Bible with such love, compassion, clarity, and sensibility; and for tying it all together so well.

We praise You, oh Precious Jesus, our Saviour, our Redeemer, oh, Ancient of Days, Prince of Peace. We call on You, we give You thanks. It is all for Your glory!! Blessings, fellow saints!

  3. This morning, I came across another video, I am compelled to share. The testimony by Wintley Phipps and message he shared is divine. This is what he said: “God told me to share this with you: ‘It is in the quiet crucible of your personal private sufferings that your noblest dreams are born and God’s greatest gifts are given in compensation for what you have been through.'” Let that message lift and carry us, as wings of angels, fellow saints. A heavenly gift from our splendid King!

He went on to sing ‘It Is Well With My Soul’, with deep conviction:

It Is Well With My Soul
    Horatio G. Spafford

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
    When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.
    Refrain:
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.
Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
    Let this blest assurance control,
That Christ has regarded my helpless estate,
And hath shed His own blood for my soul.
My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought!
My sin, not in part but the whole,
Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more,
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!
For me, be it Christ, be it Christ hence to live:
If Jordan above me shall roll,
No pang shall be mine, for in death as in life
Thou wilt whisper Thy peace to my soul.
    But, Lord,

  4. Daniel’s visions certainly are attention-getting. Thank you Rev. Mainse for your explanations of them.
We in Alberta are getting a new Premier. I pray our next Premier will be a God-fearing soul.
Happy Spring everyone as we approach this awakening season with joy and reassurance of an everlasting life.

  5. Okay, so I didn’t know what a “ram” was! I looked it up on Google and after going through all the different “rams”, i.e., computer parts, trucks, etc., I found out it was a sheep. I don’t know what kind of a sheep, but a sheep! It came to my attention that the priest had to make an offering for unintentional sin. I found my self committing an unintentional sin last week. I offered to go to a floor two down for a lady who wanted a newspaper that had not been brought up to her. I picked up a newspaper, not knowing it had a room number on it (not hers). She told me her daughter would not have wanted me to steal. There are complimentary papers in the nursing home but hers was paid for and ordered. I didn’t know I was stealing.
