Today’s Reading: 2 Samuel 22

The fortress of Masada stands high above the Jordan Valley floor. It was here that Herod built his highly protected palace to which he could escape. Later it was used by Jewish freedom fighters who, for a couple of years, resisted a Roman siege. It was in this area where David hid from those who sought to destroy him. He may have had this scene in mind as he sang, “The Lord is my Rock.”

Key Verse: 2 Samuel 22:2

And he said: “The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer…”

The words of today’s reading take on much more significance because of the previous chapters in the life of King David and those around him. David has lived a perilous life. He has fled from King Saul and from his own son, Absalom. From his years as a shepherd boy, protecting his sheep from the lion and the bear, to the rebellions which could have taken his life, David knew very well that he needed a hiding place in a time of crisis. David had hidden in the cleft of a rock. He had known the protection of a fortress. Now, as he composes and sings these Psalms, he is not at all confused as to how he has been saved each time. He recognized that he was never protected by a physical rock or a fortress made of stone alone. He confesses that his true Deliverer in every case was the Lord God. We learn here that God is our Protector, our strength and our future.

Lord Jesus, I run into Your loving arms. You are my Rock, my Fortress, and my Deliverer. Keep me, I pray, from foolish human pride which would make me think, even for a moment, that I can go it alone. In Your strong Name, Jesus, I ask for Your grace 24/7, Amen!

David burst into song when he realized all God had done for him. I’ve done the same just now. As I sing “Rock of Ages, cleft for me; let me hide myself in Thee,” I think of my dear friend, George Beverly Shea, who, at the age of 104, went into the immediate presence of his Rock, his Fortress and his Deliverer, the Lord Jesus. George, or Bev, as he became known, was raised in Canada’s capital region and was a graduate of Annesley College in Ottawa, where my parents served. As Billy Graham’s soloist, he has probably sung to more people in person than anyone else (click here to hear him sing about the “Rock of Ages”). I can never read 2 Samuel 22 without also singing a children’s song, the words taken from this Scripture, and the music composed by my son-in-law, Bruce Stacey. My great-grandchildren began singing this when they were two years old. Click here for the God Rocks team with “The Lord is my Rock,” sung by my granddaughter, Sheryl Neilson.

Yours, singing for joy at the knowledge that “He is my Rock,”

P.S. I watched a very special 100 Huntley Street telecast on my lap top yesterday. I encourage you to do the same and then call in your pledge of support for this culture-challenging and culture-changing ministry. Thank you!!! (click here)

  1. Great song of praise. Giving glory to God for his protection, strength and victories.
My thoughts go to Psalm 18 where some of these verses are quoted. Love verse 1 and so many others. So personal. So many times referring to God, our strength.

Beautiful song by Bev Shea, I also listened to another song he sung “Does Jesus Care”. He sang this at the age of 103, believed to be his last song before “His Promotion to God” at the age of 104.

May all the bloggers be encouraged and strengthened today.

  2. Hello David …thank you so much for continuing to lead us through the bible with the wisdom and understanding the Lord has given you.
Just wanted you to know the link to the episode of 100 Huntley street for April 18th takes you there but the program will not load. Tried to access directly from website and it will not access from there either.
Sorry could not find another way to contact anyone.

  3. For 3 years up to 1948, I lived on Melgund Ave. the one block long street with Annesley College between the east end of Melgund and Bank St. I always admired that stone building until it was torn down for a beer store. With daily prayers for your strength and no infections.

    • Isn’t that odd? Where I live in British Columbia buildings were torn down and were replaced with Wine stores, Wine & Dine Stores, funny how those business seem to flourish, they sure do here! Doesn’t make sense to me!

I love how people from all over share on this blog! God bless everyone and may God grant healing where it is needed for health reasons, for emotional reasons, for financial reasons! Thank you Lord

  4. “The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer…” Daniel’s Psalm 22 is beautifully inspired. Amen!!! Have just mailed in a new monthly pledge of support, David! Blessings dearest saints in the Lord almighty!

  5. Blessings and thanks to all who prayed for my “ant” situation! I have placed bait around but they are underneath my mobile home, deep down, I need a Pest Control person to help me out! They will! But at a great cost!

Please pray that the parts for my stove IMMEDIATELY so the stove can be fixed.

I am responsible for taking care of the ants as this is part of our agreement as we live in this Mobile Home Park, I do not want any trouble from the owners,

    Speaking of the owners, please pray for Michael as he proceeds to engage with the Rental Agency to appeal this new law to raise our rents 4 times the amount, apparently there is a loop hole in the Rental Agency and those who are greedy are using this loop hole to raise the rents;
there have been many reports on the news about this happening all across Canada!
please pray for the Lord to intervene into this matter and completely remove these increases!
I don`t know how much more I can handle, the stress is unbelievable, I also deal with a mental illness, Seasonal Affected Disorder and a sleep disorder!
I ask for prayers for the Lord to give me strength and to continue to encourage me to swim and sing in the choir! I also ask for prayers for the Lord to grant me a financial breakthrough to clear all debts, help family and invest some for a better income! Thank you to all who pray for each other.
