Today’s Reading: Exodus 22

Click scripture link to read online or HERE to listen online (then click the symbol of the audio speaker above the scripture portion on the right-hand side).

I took this photo as the sun was setting. We are looking east from Israel across the Jordan Rift Valley at the mountains of Moab in Jordan. If we could time travel to approximately 3,500 years ago, we would find the Israelites on the other side of these mountains either camping or on the move.

Key Verse: Exodus 22:31a

You are to be My holy people. (New International Version)

Here, in chapter 22, are practical rules for the purpose of maintaining a well-run, harmonious society. For example, in verse three is the phrase “he shall be sold.” This was not slavery as in 150 years ago, but a method of repayment by labour in lieu of wages, perhaps for five years, where the families would be cared for. In studying judicial history, it is interesting to note the wide acceptance of God’s civil laws. Many, if not most, of our laws are based on these laws. The ultimate purpose of these laws was that the people would be a “holy people.” Please take the time to look up and meditate on 1 Peter 2:9-10. This is a definition of “Holy.”

Lord God, You are Holy. I sing the old hymn, “Holy, Holy, Holy” unto You. Please work in me Your sanctifying power so that I will be able to live a holy life. I pray this through Jesus Christ Who always, at all times and places, lived a life of holiness. Amen!

As a child living in Ottawa, Canada, I was impressed every Sunday by the scroll painted on the wall just behind the minister as he preached God’s Word. It said, “Holiness unto the Lord.” I learned the word “restitution” (Exodus 22:5) early in life. I may have been 6 or 7 years old. I came home from a nearby sand pit with a spoon. Mother said, “David, that spoon does not belong to you. You must go around to the neighbours and find the owner, returning it with an apology to the owner.” With a sense of shame I did that. Mother would not tolerate anything even close to stealing. It happened again when I was 9. Tempted by other boys, I stole an apple from in front of Kincaid’s grocery store. I ate it, but I could never fool Mother. She finally got a confession out of me, and I was required to take 5 cents of my own money and give it to Mr. Kincaid with an apology. So that’s the story of my life of crime. I most certainly got the message of living a holy life!!!

Yours for holy living,

  1. Thank you David, Your personal words make it all so relevant as it revives memories of my own life. I love how you always connect it with the Holy Scripture.

  2. Good morning, thank you Pastor David for you comments on the passage, I find it very helpful in understanding what was going on at that time. Ultimately, the whole purpose was for people to be holy. Your prayer is my prayer, as I want to become more like our dear Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. By the way you had a wonderful mother who taught you what was right. I remember my oldest son, took a chocolate bar or candy from our convenience store when he was very little. When we got outside I noticed it in his hand, we both went back into the store to pay for it. The store owner was going to let him have it, but I wanted to teach him a lesson so we payed up. It don’t think he has ever forgotten that, by the way he will be fifty in October. We have often talked about it over the years when his kids were present.
    Blessings to all, Eleanor Mc.

  3. I have been praying for you, dear David; praying, praying, praying. I know all the saints on the blog, near and far, far and wide; across Canada, throughout the United States, Israel, and all around the world, are doing the same. Thanks for the example, today, and for being such a wonderful example to us–to shine as lights in the world for Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour. Wishing all a blessed day, in the Lord.

For the word of the Lord is right, and all His work is done in truth. He loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of the goodness of the Lord.
    Psalm 33:4-5 NKJV

Holy Holy Holy Lord God Almighty .. [Agnus Dei]

  6. Saints of the blog, we need urgent prayer for our David Mainse. Please, everyone, on hands and knees, at this moment, together. Let us unite in prayer for David and call out together, to our Heavenly Father God, our precious Saviour Jesus Christ, and to the sanctity of the Holy Spirit. Please, God, we call out and ask for Your powerful blessing on David Mainse, now Lord! Lord God, strengthen him, empower him, heal him, transform him, and bless him with Your healing touch. Lift him with the power we know only You can deliver, Lord. It is through our prayer that we unite asking for this blessing upon David, Lord. He is the most blessed Christian leader to so many of us. We know you call those to return to You in Your time, but we are asking for Your gracious favour of more time on earth with David Mainse, Lord–healthy time. Please, Lord God, hear our prayer and answer it, we do believe, for David’s sake, for complete healing of his body. We pray for this in Jesus’ mighty Name. And all the saints said, amen, amen, and amen!!! We love you, David!!!

  8. Thank you for this Mr David Mainse! Every time I see photos on this blog and elsewhere of beautiful Israel, I’m reminded of my journey to Israel with your group in 2013. Through your blog and Huntley St several years ago I came to Christ and was redeemed of addiction, and I grew to know our wonderful God and Savior Jesus Christ! I’m standing with everyone in prayer for healing and our mighty Lord and Savior to give you great peace! Blessings!
~ Moses was a great man of GOD and it makes me weep that he never got to cross the Jordan to the promised land, …but he was there in the New Testament up on the Mount of Tranfiguration with Jesus…. so really he did make it after all!
(Sorry this isn’t really in context with today’s scripture verse, but it’s exciting)
