Today’s Reading: Luke 1

The Church of the Sepulchre of Saint Mary, informally known as the Tomb of the Virgin Mary, is regarded by many as the burial place of Mary, the mother of Jesus. The church is located in the Kidron Valley on the foothills of the Mount of Olives, just outside the Old City of Jerusalem. The decor of these ancient churches is modelled after the Temple in Jerusalem, which was destroyed in 70 A.D.

Key Verse: Luke 1:34-35

Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?” And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God…”

Having completed Exodus, we arrive in Luke. Our readings from the Hebrew Scriptures to the Greek Scriptures and back to the Hebrew is for the purpose of balance between the two. Luke, the physician (Colossians 4:14), gleans his material as a journalist would, from personal interviews. He was the assistant to Paul, and as such, would’ve had at least two years in Palestine while Paul was in prison. No doubt he interviewed Mary, the mother of Jesus, those who knew John the Baptist and his family, the shepherds of Bethlehem, and others during those two years.

If we believe there is a Creator God who is involved in His creation, then it’s no problem for Him to perform ongoing miraculous acts. The conception of Jesus is such an act. The Scripture makes it very clear that Mary had not known a man sexually. Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit. He had no earthly biological father. Therefore, He was uniquely “The Son of God.”

PRAYER FOR TODAY:

Thank You, Father God, that You, by the agency of the Holy Spirit, caused the conception of Your only begotten Son, Jesus. Even as Zacharias, Elizabeth, and Mary were moved to give magnificent messages from You, Lord God, I am moved deeply and I proclaim Your greatness. I worship You with all my heart, soul and mind. Speak through me, Holy Spirit. I’m available for Your purposes. In Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen!

100 PERSONAL WORDS:

Dr. Nelles Silverthorne was a frequent guest on the 100 Huntley Street TV program. He was a research pediatrician at Sick Children’s Hospital in Toronto (Sick Kids). At the very start of his career, he was an assistant to Banting and Best, the discoverers of insulin. He gave the very first civilian injection of penicilin to a 12-year-old boy who was dying. I’ve met that boy. He’s now a medical doctor. Dr. Silverthorne erected the very first oxygen tent at Sick Kids Hospital. He developed the vaccine for whooping cough. He also carried on a practice at his office on Bloor Street. Even though he was over 80, he took on my first two grandchildren, Sheryl and Christopher Stacey, as patients. He announced on live TV, “No woman ever came into my office who was pregnant and said, ‘I know not a man.'” God had met Dr. Silverthorne at a 1950’s Billy Graham meeting and the doctor’s life was transformed. He became an outspoken believer in the Lord Jesus Christ. He believed in the virgin birth, and so do I.

Yours for the certainty that God became one of us, a human being,

David

  1. I believe in the virgin birth. The Son of God is the Son of Man–Jesus Christ–we worship You–amen! Thank You God for being a miracle-maker. Miracles shine as lights in the darkened crevaces of the world. Miracles bring faith when people believe in the all transcending power of having witnessed God’s touch and saving grace in their lives. Many of us have been saved by the miraculous power of God’s Hand and surely know the favour of His mercy and love. For I am nothing without You, Jesus. I hold onto Your cloak and do not let go. I lay my worries on Your shoulders for I know you are strong enough to carry them. I am protected by Your Armour and Army of Angels. I lift up my cross and follow You. I dedicate my life to serving and testifying and witnessing for You. You are the Alpha and the Omega, the Lord God, who is and was and is to come–the Almighty. The first breath of life and the very last.

Blessings dear saints for a wonderful day!

  2. Praise The Lord oh my soul and all that is within me, Praise His Holy Name. You are Wonderful, Powerful and Mighty and you CAN do miracles today as you did for Elizabeth and Mary. Pastor David is a fine example. Thank you Thomas for your prayer last night . Granddaughter Lena (10) is still in hospital in Texas. Severe kidney infection since Saturday. Pray that her temp stay down for 24 hrs so she can go home. My daughter has to stay with her. Thank you in advance for your prayers.

  3. I met Dr. Silverthorne because of my oldest son who had severe asthma. He had treated my sister in 1944. She had the same infection as the boy who received the penecilin. She did not receive the penecilin and was not expected to live (fever of 106 @ 14 months of age). She has lived as a mentally 4 year old all of her life. My sister-in-law met Banting at Toronto General Hosp. She was a type 1 diabetic. The treatment in those days was not a good combination of things. They told her she could eat watermelon because there was no food value (but lots of sugar)! They gave her extra coupons for fatty foods, i.e. butter, bacon, as they thought fats would make up for the lost calories of not having sugar! She died at 45 from heart problems. We have come a LONG way since those early discoveries thank God. We must pray for more direction from God re: Ebola and the safety of those working among the people suffering from it. It is so very contageous. Lord, may Your Perfect Will be done in these areas of disaster, In Jesus Name. Amen.

  4. Amen! Please remember us as we travel concerning ebola. Thanks. Just had a travel insurance company refuse me because of my blood pressure. Would like to be healed in that area. Lord, we were reminded this morning that you do miracles including the healing of Lena. In Jesus Name, Amen.

    • Will pray for safely Ger hope you get insurance else where. Praise God my daughter just texted me and Lena will get home this afternoon. God is so good.

    • Lord God, we know You are the miracle maker and can open any door when it is serving Your Glory. We lift Ger up to You, Heavenly Father, and ask for coverage with an insurance company to come into place in time for her trip to serve your children overseas, Lord! If it is Your Will and be it all for Your Glory, dear Lord. Amen!

  5. Thank you Father for The Virgin birth of Our Saviour Jesus. Thank you Jesus for your sacrificial death on Calvary’s cross for our sins.

The human aspect of the birth must have been difficult for Mary and Joseph but what an awesome privilege to be the parents of a The Lord Jesus.

Praying for you Ger and that all things will be worked out for you. Blessings to all.

  6. Father I pray that Ger will be able to finish up her plans so she can leave and share the Gospel with others in their own language. praise the lord! Lord I pray that scientists and medical teams can develop a vaccine for ebola! Father ALL PEOPLE must come to the knowledge of the Triune God! I pray Father that the Holy Spirit will descend upon the people and all will kneel and bow down and accept Jesus Christ as their personal Saviour! A few days back someone commented that 100 Huntley Street never seemed judgmental! I must agree! That was one thing I remember from years ago and that was why I always enjoyed the program! That meant alot to me in my younger years. I had an uncle who was very caring. The past didn`t matter. From this point on did! Seems to me Jesus is that way also! Confess your sins, receive forgiveness and move forward! Let us keep praying for those seeking medicine to help others Blessings to everyone!

  7. Thank you for this inspiring message. I believe in the Virgin Birth. If God could do that for Mary and for mankind, there is nothing He cannot do. If we, like Mary, will accept God’s Will for our lives, He will continue to do marvellous things to bless others and to glorify His Name! Bless you, David Mainse!

  8. All things are possible with God, HE IS GOD AND THERE IS NONE LIKE HIM, PRAISE HIS HOLY NAME!!
Yes, I believe that Jesus was conceived by the Spirit of God, and I believe He was born of a Virgin.
Jesus was also birthed in me, Praise God by the Holy Spirit; that too is a miracle. Thank you Jesus!!
I pray a miracle for you Ger for your trip.
Praise God Lena is home from the hospital!!!!
