DOWN TO EGYPT

Today’s Reading: Genesis 38-39

The Great Sphinx and the Pyramids of Giza are among the most recognizable symbols of the civilization of ancient Egypt. Joseph and the Midianite slave traders may well have passed here.

Key Verse: Genesis 39:9

There is no one greater in this house than I, nor has he kept back anything from me but you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?

Chapter 38 is such a contrast with chapter 39. Immorality vs. morality. Judah was wrong. Joseph was right. Joseph faced a temptation that is glorified today – the temptation to sin sexually. Therefore, it’s important that we take to heart Joseph’s response. He refused to “do this great wickedness and sin against God.” Joseph proves that we can, if we will, stand firm in doing right, recognizing that to do otherwise is to act against God. His is an example we should follow. Ultimately, Jesus is our supreme Example of holy living…moral steel down His backbone. Joseph paid a price for his righteous stand. Jesus paid the infinite price as the sinless Sacrificial Offering for the sins of all people.

PRAYER FOR TODAY:

Lord God, please put steel down my backbone. Please give me moral strength as You did for the Apostle Paul who wrote Your words to him, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness” (2 Cor. 12:9). Thank You, Lord Jesus, that You live in me and I in You. Together we are strong. Amen!

100 PERSONAL WORDS:

For years I quoted Galatians 2:20 each morning: “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.” I have recommended many times to all who struggle to live a Godly life that they memorize this verse as I have done and quote it daily. There is such power in God’s Word. “Your Word have I hid in my heart that I might not sin against You” (Psalm 119:11). I found that memorization plus daily quoting moves the Word from my brain into my heart. The Word is pumped throughout my entire being all day long. Joseph is a hero of mine, but my ultimate hero is Christ…and “Christ lives in me!” I have failed many times, but “Jesus never fails.”

Yours for holy living,

David

P.S. Last night Norma-Jean and I had the privilege of attending the official Farewell Dinner for the Honourable David C. Onley, who has served for the last seven years as the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario. He is a tremendous man of courage and faith, and he has been a champion for the rights of those living with disabilities. Below are a couple of photos from last night’s event. David was a guest on 100 Huntley Street a few years back (to see the series of interviews conducted by Jim Cantelon, click here).

Norma-Jean and me last night with the Honourable David C. Onley and his wife Ruth Ann.

The official portrait of David C. Onley was unveiled last night. It will hang at Queens Park, along with the paintings of all of Ontario's past Lieutenant Governors. Note his Bible in the painting.

  1. Wow! Such a powerful message this morning about right and wrong. God’s message is so clear by the examples he uses in the bible to teach us. Amen! Powerful message this morning, David! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Perfect verses to memorize and recite throughout the day. The power of the living God within us. Jesus Christ crucified personified and glorified! Amen! Wonderful celebration and photo–you and Norma-Jean look fantastic with Honourable David C. Onley and his wife Ruth! Have a blessed day, dear saints!

  2. Your prayer is profound, this morning, David! “Lord God, please put steel down my backbone. Please give me moral strength as You did for the Apostle Paul who wrote Your words to him, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness” (2 Cor. 12:9). Thank You, Lord Jesus, that You live in me and I in You. Together we are strong. Amen!” Together we are strong, indeed!!!

  3. Wonderful pictures and painting rendition of The Honorable David Onley! Another scripture which comes to mind for today’s reading is 1 Corinthians 10:13New International Version (NIV) No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted[b] beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted,[c] he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. Gods strength and blessings, to all!

  4. I don’t like to judge but how evil some women can be. Good for Joseph for leaving the ‘lady’ in the lurch.
Memorizing quotes, verses etc. seems to help with avoiding diseases like Alzheimers. My dad used to drive me crazy with verses he had memorized as well as poems etc. In fact when they were children in school they had to memorize government officials names and positions etc. My dad was lucid to the end as an elderly gentleman. Wouldn’t it be ironic if the cure for dementia was memorizing bible verses.
Such a lovely pic of the four of you Rev. DM. as well as the official portrait of David Onley.
May God bless us all and end the heat wave in the West.

  5. Wonderful reading for today and a great lesson to learn about temptation. Thanks to everyone for the verses of scripture, which are good to memorize and say each day.

A very striking picture of all of you at the dinner last night and the portrait of The a Honorable David Onley, with his bible on the table, will be a treasure. His lovely wife, like Norma-Jean, is a beautiful singer too.

Praise God for godly people in our government, I pray The Lord will raise up many more to serve. Blessings.

  6. Lord Jesus, we thank you for men and women who stand for righteousness in this country such as Rev. David and Norma-Jean Mainse and the Honorable David and Ruth Ann Onley. Amen!

  7. What a wonderful picture of two Godly couples who have been in place for the province of Ontario, may they be copied as Men (couples) who have chosen to put God first in their lives.
May Gods Blessing go with you all as you follow His leading……………
