TRANSMITTING TRUTH

Suggested Reading: Proverbs 23

This is the facade of St. Catherine's Church, with statues of Jerome and the Virgin Mary out front. Midnight Mass, carried around the world on TV Christmas Eve, originates from this church. Jerome translated the Holy Scriptures from Hebrew and Greek into Latin, the language of the Roman Empire, in a large cave located under this church. It is located next to the cave which we are told served as the stable where Jesus was born. Jerome's cave stretches under the Church of the Nativity and is adjacent to the stable cave. This church is connected, wall to wall, to the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem. Like Elijah's statue on Mt. Carmel, Jerome's statue is depicted as trampling on death. The last enemy, death, is defeated!

Key Verse: Proverbs 23:23

Buy the truth, and do not sell it, also wisdom and instruction and understanding.

Jerome, who is depicted in the statue above, invested most of his life in producing the first complete translation into Latin from the original languages of Hebrew and Greek. His work became the official translation of the Bible for the lands of the Roman Empire. In a very real sense, Jerome bought the truth with an investment of 20 years of his life. He gave “truth,” “wisdom,” “instruction,” and “understanding” to the whole world. Other translations were made into other languages from Jerome’s amazing work. As we’ve highlighted in the last few days, Sam Moore became President of the Thomas Nelson Company, “bought” the Truth (so to speak) and financed a new translation into English (and other languages) known as the New King James Bible, the primary translation that I use in this blog. More about Sam and this translation over the next few days.

Today’s reading may contain the longest section on any one topic in all of the book of Proverbs. Verses 20 and 21 refer to “winebibbers” and “the drunkard.” Then verses 29 to 35 are all about those “who linger long at the wine.” It’s a most serious warning which wise people will take to heart.

PRAYER FOR TODAY:

Lord God, I pray for (1) truth, which is manifested in the gifts of (2) wisdom, (3) instruction and (4) understanding, to be constantly active in my life. I ask for Your protection against the mind-muddling effects of alcohol and any other substance or activities that work against these four gifts. I pray this in the Name of the One who always demonstrated these qualities, Jesus Christ, Amen!!!

100 PERSONAL WORDS:

One week ago today I stood in front of Jerome’s statue in Bethlehem. I was videotaping a section of the five half-hour Christmas shows to be carried Dec. 23rd to 27th on the CTS TV stations and satellite channels across Canada. As I thought about Jerome, I thought about Professor R. K. Harrison, the Hebrew language scholar of Wycliffe College, of the University of Toronto, who was employed by Sam Moore to help in the New King James translation. Tomorrow, God willing, I’ll post an interview that I did with Dr. Harrison on his great work. I’ve often been asked why I use the New King James Bible. Over these days, I’m attempting to answer that question.

Two days from now I expect that Norma-Jean and I will spend the day with our friends Sam and Peggy Moore in Nashville. Sam was booked to spend a day with me here in Canada last August, but due to illness his trip was cancelled. Sam had published millions of copies of the older King James translation prior to launching the new translation. Sam is a hero of mine!

Yours for publishing, reading, and learning the “Word of God,”

David

  1. There is nothing like knowing the truth about anything
God said He is the way the truth and the life

  2. Good morning David
I pray all is well with you and Norma-Jean.
This mornings scriptures are so powerful. What a vivid picture of truth conserning the unbeliever vs the believer. My heart is saddened as I read today’s blog because I have two sisters who do not believe in Jesus nor the word of God.
One says there is no God the other sister says she believes there is a God but he
is not so narrow minded as to put conditions on us. Just last week I was visiting my 99 .75 year old father at my sister’s place in rural Calidonia just off hwy 6 .
Our discution lead to the kjv bible and my sister insisted it was not inspired by God. She became angry and that’s where the discution left off.

I am praying that God will seek out my sisters the way he did me. I was a tough
nut to crack but eventually I did become broken. Thank you God the father, Jesus
the son and holy spirit for lifting me out of darkness and poverty. My spirit was bank rupt. But now I am rich in him the one and only saviour “Lord Jesus Christ ”
Who bought me for a priceless, price.
I pray my sisters will one day see the light.
Lord I just lift up all of us who have unsaved family memders, I pray you will lead our unsaved family and unsaved friends to you. In Jesus Name Amen!

Have a wonderful day every one, blessings to you all 🙂

    • I think we can all agree with you M&J, as we yearn for our lost loved ones to come into a saving knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. It never ceases to amaze me as to how deceived the world is to Satan and his lies, but when our loved ones are blinded to the truth, it actually hurts. Your presence, your love and your faith speak loudly to your family M&J, never forget this. Keep praying, the Lord is sure to hear your petitions.

  3. A good read today – much wisdom. The last two churches we attended (for 10 and 20+ years) both used the NIV version. I did not like the change from KJV as I had memorised as a child from KJV. I will be watching the blog for your view on the NKJ. Off to dentist now!!

  4. God bless your visit,David and Norma-Jean. Amen, Marla. This Friday I hope to attend a local meeting for household salvation. We must keep our unsaved loved ones ever before the Lord. I asked for mercy this morning from the owner for the preservation of the trees which serve as a windbreak behind my house. Please pray it will be granted. Thanks. It was the use of a tree that played a part in our salvation. Keep dancing, Susan.

  5. Yes, the truth about our lives is found in instruction, understanding and wisdom. Open our minds to what is true as we gain daily insight into our lives day-by-day. Grant that we may all aspire to, and have noble hero’s, such as David Mainse, Sam Moore, and above all, Jesus Christ. Have a great day, to all!

  6. I praise the Lord we have the freedom in this Canada so free and strong and true
to read our bibles with no one watching over our shoulder, we are so Blessed to live in
a reasonalable free Land thank you Jesus….Blessyou all…..R…

  7. Dear Rev. David M. and Norma-Jean.
Have a great time reuniting with your dear friend Sam Moore . Such a treasure is NKJV for someone like me where french is my first language and where the original KJV. became quite a challenge for me in Shakespeares language .
I join all my fellow bloggers in fervent prayer to You Lord for my family salvation Amen.
    Keeping you in prayer Ger.
    Have a blessed day everyone.
    xxxx Carole.

  8. Thank you, Carole. Unfortunately, my plea for the trees was not heeded and they are still lowering them out there. God encouraged me however by sending a carpenter this morning to strengthen the roof of my shed. God is faithful in the big things and the smaller things. When we can’t see His hand, we can trust His heart.
