A view of the Dead Sea, also known as the Salt Sea. Somewhere in this vicinity of the valley of salt, the armies of Israel and Syria met in battle (2 Samuel 8:13).

Key Verse: 2 Samuel 9:7

So David said to him, “Do not fear, for I will surely show you kindness for Jonathan your father’s sake, and will restore to you all the land of Saul your grandfather; and you shall eat bread at my table continually.”

In Chapter nine we see the Lord’s kindness to King Saul’s descendants. Saul’s grandson, Mephibosheth, had a little son, thus preserving the family name and inheritance.
David was faithful to the covenant relationship into which he and Jonathan, Saul’s son, had entered, as recorded in 1 Samuel 20:14-16. How much more faithful will Jesus, the seed of David, be to the covenant He has made with His loved ones. That’s us! — we who believe in Him. Jesus’ new covenant is described in Hebrews, chapters 8 & 9. We may want to find that in our Bibles, read, and meditate on Jesus’ faithfulness.
Twice in our reading it is mentioned that Jonathan’s son was lame in his feet. Those feet were placed under David’s table continually. This was grace…unmerited favour from David. Jesus has placed our feet under His table, seating us in heavenly places (Ephesians 2:4-9). Our lameness is covered, and we sit at the table of the King. God has “blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ” (Ephesians 1:3).

PRAYER FOR TODAY:

Lord Jesus, You not only place our feet under Your table, You have set an example of washing Your disciples’ feet. I pray that, by Your enabling strength, I will do a better job of washing the feet of others, as their servant, in a variety of ways. Amen!

100 PERSONAL WORDS:

Yesterday I learned of the passing of former British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher. I was very aware of her strong Christian beliefs when she presented Carolyn Cox to the Queen as a candidate for a peerage. The Queen then elevated Carolyn to the House of Lords, where she became Deputy Speaker. The reason for all this was that Carolyn, as an educator, had championed the return of the study of the Bible into British schools. With the Prime Minister’s support, this was accomplished. It was Carolyn who, in a TV appearance on 100 Huntley Street, convinced us to enter the Sudan to free slaves and help a very needy people with food, schools and medical clinics.

I’ve just pulled up on the computer a speech by Margaret Thatcher to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. Quote, “Reading recently, I came across the starkly simple phrase, ‘Christianity is about spiritual redemption, not about social reform’……most Christians would regard it as their personal Christian duty to help their fellow men and women. They would regard the lives of children as a precious trust. These duties do not come from any secular legislation passed by Parliament, but from being a Christian.” Actually I think it would be great for every blog participator to read the entire speech. You can find it here.

Yours for placing our feet under the King’s table, because of His amazing grace,

David

  1. Thank you for your blogs! Today’s was special for me because I have been lame since car accident in FL. 7 years ago. I was up very early this am praying for YOU as you create this blog. Thank you.

  2. Wow! Thanks for including Margaret Thatcher’s Speech to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, David. Her reflection on Christianity was awesome. I especially liked when she said Christianity stems from three beliefs in particular, which are spiritual, not social. We have been given the right of choice between good and evil. We have been made in God’s image and are expected to exercise judgement in using that choice (when we open our hearts to God, He has promised to work within us). Jesus Christ, Son of God, when faced with His terrible choice and lonely vigil, chose to lay down his life for us on the cross. That shows the pressure Jesus carried on his shoulders; much more than the physical weight of the cross, was the insurmountable emotional baggage of setting us free from our wretched sinfulness. Oh, that we have been saved by Jesus–such a selfless sacrifice for Him to have made for us that we would be free! The underlying point Jesus showed was to do and give for others, by putting them first, above ourselves. Indeed, the love God has for each of us is incredible. We need spread those seeds for others, everywhere we go. All for the glory of God!

  3. So much to think about today. Such a profound speech by Margaret Thatcher! I particularly liked her point about the Holy Spirit guiding our moral impulse and not the majority view, even held in a state of democracy. Christ’s testament, a new covenant, so much to be grateful for! Have a great day to all!
