GOD’S IMAGE

Suggested Reading: Genesis 1-2

A couple sits watching the sunset over the Mediterranean Sea from under the remains of an ancient Roman aqueduct in the area of Caesarea.

Key Verse: Genesis 1:27

“So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.”

“God created.” “Elohim bara” (Hebrew). This Name for God is always plural, yet in the Hebrew language it takes a singular verb (Gen. 1:1). Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are at work to make something out of nothing. In the rest of the story the verb is “Asah,” which is what a carpenter does when he works with material already in existence. Chapter 2 is an expansion of what God did in chapter 1. We are made in His Image. We are not just physical beings. We have a capacity for a life beyond, for communication with God, and God with us. Like God, we are intended to live forever! Because we are made in His image, we can know Him. We have the freedom to choose. We can ignore Him or reject Him or we can learn of Him, receiving Him as our God, believing in Him and not just about Him.

PRAYER FOR TODAY:

Lord God, I’ve decided to believe in You. Thank you for enabling me to find this blog. Your Thoughts are expressed in Words. Help me to maintain the committment of reading Your Word daily, getting to know what You think of me and of everything. In Jesus Name I pray, Amen!

100 PERSONAL WORDS:

I marvel at God’s creation. On our property, according to someone who knows, there is a 300 year old cherry tree. Amazing! Yesterday a large red fox decided to have a sleep on our driveway. Norma-Jean thought it was dead, but it jumped up and ran off, it’s long fluffy tail floating in the breeze. God must love variety. In mediating on creation, my heart and mind are lifted up to contemplate the Creator God, and Jesus Himself. John writes that, “Without Him nothing was made that was made.” The mystery of it all astounds me.

We’ve read the first book of the New Testament and we’re now beginning the first book of the Old Testament. Remember, at any time you or someone you know can begin this journey and in two years, with bite-sized readings, God’s thoughts expressed in Words will be yours, and the Spirit of God will bring to remembrance what you need to know when you need to know it.

Please feel free to post your comments. Each one is read, and I thank you for your input. However, I’m sorry that I am rarely able to reply to your specific questions.

Yours for learning to think God’s thoughts,

David

  1. After reading your blog today David, the Holy Spirit led me to open up to a passage in the book of Colossians. In my Bible the heading to this passage is “Christ Is Supreme” … and I thought to myself, how fitting! Christ really is our All! Here is the reading, it is my prayer that it blesses someone today. Colossians 1: 15-20 (NLT) –
Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation, for through him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can

  2. (continued) … He made the things we can’t see and the things we can see – such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world. Everything was created through him and for him. He existed before anything else, and he holds all creation together. Christ is also the head of the church which is his body. He is the beginning, supreme over all who rise from the dead. So he is the first in everything. For God in all his fullness was pleased to live in Christ, and through him God reconciled everything to himself. He made peace with everything in heaven and on earth by means of Christ’s blood on the cross.

  3. Thank you for your words today. I am ecouraged and awestruck by the many artistic creations in this world as expressed in Johns quote, “Without Him, nothing was made that was made”. This is so beautifully reflected in Reynold’s picture today of the setting sun! Our Lord will certainly see us through all times, as Genesis 1-2 reminds us, we are but dust without our soul and God breathed life.

  4. David, I want you to know that your anniversary edition of 100 Huntley Street inspired me to look at my own life again and decide to follow you in reading the Bible and devotional every day…faithfully. I see how God has so blessed you and Norma Jean, (I’m certain it’s because of your faithfulness.)…Seeing how He gave you the strength to participate for the entire week was a sight to behold and then, your blessing in getting to see all those dear people who worked with you through the years. Seeing them again must have been so special for you.

Thank you for your faithfulness and for showing us part of your reward for that faithfulness over the years to inspire us to walk with our Lord faithfully day by day…

  6. Isn’t what God created wonderful, the picture today that Ron had taken reminds me of an artist painting a picture. My dad and sisters are artists and are very creative to painting and taking pictures. Thank you David

  7. I am an artist and God is my entire inspiration. I create because He put that gift there, within me. It is something that is difficult to explain to non-believers, but I trust that I am meant to glorify Him in my work. A few years ago, I was instructed by Him to “Paint the unseen”, which has sent me on a journey that I could never have imagined for myself just a few years ago! Because we were created in His image, and God is a ‘creator’, then I suppose we are all meant to be creators;artists, writers, musicians, creative thinkers…
Recently I was shown the melody in the natural world around us. What an amazing discovery! Now when I look at a beautiful sunset, I can see God’s melody in it. He is so amazing…the ultimate artist!

  8. God’s clock keeps perfect time! Once again showing “walk by faith, not by sight! That sly fox is full of life! Faith is a gift!

  9. Thank you for sharing God’s words…and your own.
Thank you for your son’s pictures…beautiful.

Each time I explore anything God has created, I say out loud to God, ‘What a genuis you are!”

  10. Thank you for your words today, David. The picture is wonderful, it reminds me to contemplate the beauty of God’s Creation, each and every day.
