Key Verse: 2 Kings 8:19

Yet the Lord would not destroy Judah, for the sake of His servant David, as He promised him to give a lamp to him and his sons forever.

The writer of these words in our reading must have caught a faint glimpse of the glory that was to come, that of Jesus, Son of David. He spoke prophetically when he wrote that God had promised David a lamp, for Jesus is the Light of the world, a Light that shines more brightly than many lamps. Consider the statements of Jesus before and after His “I am the Light of the world” declaration (John 8:1-20). The hymn, “Amazing Grace” gets it right: “I…was blind but now I see.” In Christ we’ve moved out of the darkness into the light.
In yesterday’s reading, the servant of Elisha, Gehazi, became a leper. We considered the possibility that Gehazi may have been one of the lepers who said, “We are not doing what is right. This is a day of good news and we remain silent” (2 Kings 7:9). He may have repented and the leprosy healed, because here we see him back in his job as Elisha’s assistant. This is speculation, as we are not told the details. God’s mercy “endures forever.” We are told this 26 times in the 26 verses of Psalm 136.

PRAYER FOR TODAY:

Lord Jesus, You light up my life. I pray for grace to always walk in the light as You are in the light (1 John 1:7). In Your bright and shining Name I pray, Amen!

100 PERSONAL WORDS:

I’ll never forget the morning that Debbie Boone appeared on 100 Huntley Street in the late 80’s. Her hit song You Light Up My Life had been at the top of the pop charts. She was in Toronto in a stage production where she was playing the part of Maria Von Trapp in The Sound of Music. As we entered into our prayer time before going to air, Debbie sobbed, saying to the Lord, “It’s been so long, so long, Lord.” She was experiencing the Presence of the Lord in our Green Room as we knelt in prayer, and with her busy schedule, even though she knew Jesus as her Saviour, she may not have taken the time to let His Light permeate her daily experience. I trust I’m not being too repetitive when I write again…Jesus changes everything! I pray again, “Lord Jesus, I throw open the blinds that hide or dim Your Light. I see You Jesus! Shine Jesus shine!” As the Scriptures say, “But we see Jesus who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone” (Hebrews 2:9).

Yours for Jesus, our “Lamp,”

David

P.S. Here’s a video of Debbie Boone when she came back to 100 Huntley Street in the mid-90’s. At the beginning of the interview with Lorna Dueck (after she sings), Debbie shares who she was thinking of each time she sang You Light Up My Life (click).here

  1. I’m Very sad for Debby. She’s moved from ( quite rightly ) having Compassion on those whom I’d consdider ( in the light of Holy Scripture ) to be entrapped in the curse of abnormal sexual lifestyles… to endorsing the same. There is NO Biblical endorsement anywhere for LGBTQ lifestyles and associated sexual practises. There IS release and freedom in Jesus Christ for all Addictions ( pornography / paedophilia and more ) which set themselves in ‘Lordship’ over the individual .. against the Lordship of Jesus Christ. YES … GOD INDEED LOVES EVERY ONE OF US.. BUT HE’S THE FIRST IN LINE IN THE BUSINESS OF TRANSFORMATION FROM UNGODLINESS OF EVERY SINGLE EXPRESSION , INTO TRUE HOLINESS OF LIFESTYLE..”If any man ( woman / binary / whatever ) be in Christ , he is a NEW Creation” – 2nd book of Corinthians in the New Testament , Chapter 5 and verse 17. THERE IS HOPE … AND THE ETERNAL PROMISE OF HOPE. EARNESTLY SEEK HIS FACE https://www.facebook.com/Robin.Stephen.Aldrich
    Note: After some research , I’ve also posted the above today on the webpage

    I don’t know if it will stay there;

    • Robin, thank you for sharing truth. My heart is deeply sad for Debby, and unfortunately it is not uncommon for Christians today to buy into the ideas and beliefs of the world, all in the name of “love” and “acceptance”. And yes, Jesus is indeed well able to set every captive free who comes to Him in true repentance. I believe this with all my heart. I believe that as we as Christians today, underestimate His great, transforming power.

  2. Just wondering what Ben-Hadad king of Syria was sick from. It must have been so difficult, in those days, to see our loved ones sick. We are so blessed these days to have the knowledge of illnesses as we do.

    On wisdom:
    God’s wisdom is as near as his word: “How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! Through your precepts I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way” (Psalm 119:103–104). And his wisdom is as close as our next prayer: “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him” (James 1:5).

    Sweet words of wisdom:
    The way to know whether or not you are a servant today is to see how you respond when you are treated like one.

    So difficult living in today’s secular world, but with God’s precepts to follow, it makes it much easier and brings peace, love and joy…..just saying.
    Bless all those striving to please our heavenly Father rather than ourselves.

  3. Thanks for your posting Robin and thank God for His Word that can lead us in the right path. The scripture today shows the danger of allying with the world’s beliefs. Unfortunately too many have any knowledge of the Bible. Had some snow flurries today!

  4. Thanks Beverlee. The snow flurries melted when it hit the ground but it has been very cold lately. No one mowing their lawn here yet.

  5. great teaching by David in his exposition of today’s scripture and prayer;

    and the responses by the bloggers

    raining here today; thank you Lord, we need it!
