NO OTHER GODS

Today’s Reading: Judges 17-18

Dan is a city mentioned in the Bible, described as the northernmost city of the Kingdom of Israel, belonging to the Tribe of Dan. The city is identified with the tel known as Tel Dan, or Tel el-Qadi in Israel. Following the division of the kingdom of Solomon in 930 BC, Jeroboam established a cult at Dan as an alternative to the Temple in Jerusalem. He placed a golden calf in the city and built a house of high places and an altar. The metal frame pictured here has been recently set up to help visitors imagine how Jeroboam’s altar might have looked.

Key Verse: Judges 17:6

In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes.

The book of Judges was probably edited from manuscripts written during the years when the Children of Israel still held to the belief that the God of Abraham was their King. It would appear that there was a godly king in Israel at the time this record was finalized. There was no revision of history which might have made the people look better. The good, the bad and the ugly are all here. These last five chapters of Judges are the most depressing in the entire Bible. This was because, “Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.” When the human family turns away from an objective standard of moral behaviour, disaster always follows. How often do we hear, in our time, statements such as, “If it feels good, do it” or, “I have my own beliefs,” etc. If we read these stories with the Bible in one hand and the newspaper in the other, one cannot help but notice a similarity in human behaviour.

PRAYER FOR TODAY:

Lord God, I realize more than ever that I need to follow Your unchanging standards for my behaviour if I am to truly live my life pleasing to You and as a good influence on others. I know that I need the prayer of the man of whom Jesus spoke who prayed, “God be merciful to me a sinner.” It’s so very true that, “All [including me] have sinned and come short…” Please lift me up higher in my conduct so that I may glorify You. In Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen!

100 PERSONAL WORDS:

I’ve just read a great book which shows the amazing benefits which have come to the human family as a result of having firm objective standards as opposed to “everyone doing what is right in their own eyes.” The book I highly recommend to all my blog readers is “How Christianity Changed The World” by a Lutheran pastor and scholar named Alvin Schmidt. The forward is by Dr. Paul Maier, a man well known to long-time 100 Huntley Street viewers. It shows us what the world might be like if Jesus had not come. It deals with the value of human life, sexual morality, the freedom and dignity of women, charity and compassion, hospitals and health care, education, labour and economic freedom, science, liberty and justice for all, and other areas of life in which, as I’ve often said, “Jesus changed everything.” It’s published by Zondervan and has 442 pages. Are you ready to tackle reading a book which will show to the world that “YOU NEED JESUS!!!” I’m not sure what it costs, as I borrowed my son-in-law, Bruce Stacey’s copy. I intend to buy my own copy no matter how much it costs. It’s just that important a book (click here to order).

Yours to take a stand for God’s standards and for life,

David

  1. We choose to follow You, Lord God–our Prince of Peace, King of Kings, Jehovah Rapha, Adonai, Jehova Jireh, and Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world. We know we are nothing without You, and everything with You. We fight our battles because Your Christ light lives within us and we are redeemed. It is to You, Lord God, that we humbly bow and give thanks and praise–all for Your glory. May your day be bright and beautiful, fellow saints in the Lord. Oh, how He loves us!

The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing. Zephaniah 3:17 ESV

  2. Ger, praying for you, on the 18th anniversary of your dear mother’s passing. May you be still and with her in spirit, today, with peace, love, and joy, and fond memories of your wonderful years, together. God bless you, dear sister-in-Christ.

    • Amen,Beverlee. We have all eternity to be with our loved ones so don’t grieve long.Trust God.
      For Ger:

      Listen

Listen, hear my voice in the silent breeze
For I call out to you in your sorrow
And as the sun shines o’er the trees,
I will whisper on each new morrow.

You cry because of the great loss you bear
And I speak gently while you are asleep,
For in this way your grief I share,
And cry with you each time you weep.

I am there for you when you call My name,
I am there too as the morn awakes,
But dawn fades like a candle flame,
As does the sound My small voice makes.

Trust me and listen, you will find my voice,
It will grow as your faith grows stronger
And one day you will make a choice
To trust and fear death no longer.

That day will come when faith will set you free,
For you will hear me when I speak,
Then you will know that it was me
Who brought hope when you were still weak.

  3. Thank you Beverlee for your thoughts and prayers. Yes, I am looking forward to seeing her again someday. She was a saint and a woman of faith and strength. Is a bright sunny day today and am going to a senior’s dinner. Blessings on you saints of God!

  4. Oh how true are David’s words! If we read our newspapers today and listen to the news, we can’t help but notice that things are happening as a result of people not having a reverence for God. Everyone doing “as they please “ and we suffer the results of disobedience to God Almighty! How we need His Mercy and Grace!

Doreen, I am very happy to hear that you passed your driving test. May the Lord keep you safe on the road.

  7. Every man, woman & child has a mental illness; some more than others; I know this for 100% sure! WHY? because WE ALL HAVE HORMONES; these hormones are out of balance since birth;we inherit these imbalanced hormones; no one should ever be ashamed; talk about it; get support groups going;get help very early in life;hormones change daily, even hourly;all addictions come under hormonal imbalance, AGAIN,talk about it; never let drugs rule your life,I can say this with all my heart. NO ONE EVER HAS TO BE ASHAMED OF A HORMONAL IMBALANCE,GET HELP, AVOID JUNK FOOD;GET EXERCISING AT SOMETHING THAT GETS THE HEART RATE GOING;EXERCISE EVERY DAY FOR 45 MINUTES;NO SMOKING;DRINKING;DRUGS; Pray daily; pray Lord’s Prayer DAILY,remember in the Bible from the beginning there was “mental illness” or “hormonal imbalance”, and of course the devil is right beside all of us & cheers when we get out of control HOWEVER God entered this world so that we can seek His forgiveness and He understands; lean on Him; be honest about your moods;get support going for you and others, the Lord God loves you with His unconditional love AMAZING GRACE
feel free to post any experiences you might be having with a “mental illness” a “hormonal imbalance” or a “mood swing”
God loves each and every person on this earth; thank Him daily for all He has done for us; for all of us; He never chooses who He will love; HE LOVES ALL OF US; I pray that you may ask Jesus Christ to come into your life and be Your Lord and King and Saviour! Blessings to all…
yes I have a mental illness; I have dealt with it for 72 years; it is a “beach” BUT thanks be to God the info is more readily available for all people; never be ashamed; begin to talk; God bless you
one more piece of info: get into a mental health doctor and find out what your certain imbalance is; I am bi-polar and I was told when I was 47 years old! The hell I dealt with up to that time; it is truly a miracle that I am still here; I PRAISE AND THANK GOD FOR ALL
