THE TEACHER

Today’s Reading: Genesis 5-6

The heavens are gloriously ablaze above the Eastern Gate of the Old City of Jerusalem. Some of those whose bodies are buried in front of the gate died hoping someday to walk through that gate following the general resurrection of the dead. Like Enoch, those who walk with God now can expect to walk with God throughout eternity.

Key Verse: Genesis 5:24

And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.

The way out of the “rat race” is simply to walk with God. Obviously, God wants your company. God wanted to walk with Adam and Eve every evening. Enoch’s time with God was so precious and consistent that, no doubt with his full consent, God took Enoch directly to Heaven without him experiencing death. Enoch’s name means “teacher” in English. He must have shared with others those things he learned in those long walks. Noah was Enoch’s great-grandson and was likely the recipient of Enoch’s sharing. Remember Noah? He is the one who found favour with God. The result was that he knew how to hear from God in building an ark to save his family. You’re on your daily walk with God now as you read His Word and talk with Him in prayer. Listen as God talks with you today.

PRAYER FOR TODAY:

Lord God, as I walk with You now, please fill me with Your Holy Spirit so that I may experience “walking in the Spirit” (Galatians 5:16). In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen!

100 PERSONAL WORDS:

Like Enoch, I have children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. I’m always telling them stories. I’m convinced that from his childood, Noah heard what Great-Grandpa learned on those long walks with God. It was probably the reason Noah turned out so well. I had a Sunday School teacher by the name of Miss Johnson when I was 10 & 11. She explained Enoch’s going to Heaven without dying like this: “One day, as God and Enoch were walking together, God said, ‘Enoch, we’re much closer to My place than we are to yours, why don’t you just come on home with Me’?” For some reason I’ve never forgotten her story.

Let’s go for a walk,

David

  1. Your story about God and Enoch re,inds me of one of my favourite hymns that I often sang as a solo while attending a Baptist Church in Moncton, N.B. As a young Christian.
“IIn The Garden”. For He walks with me and He talks with me,
And He tells me I am His Own.
Think I will get my hymn book and look this hymn up and sing it to my beloved Lord this morning.

    • I immediately thought of that song too.We often get requests for that song (The Oxford and area Mens’ Club [choir] ).I was surprised to see who wrote it:
      Merle Haggard Lyrics
      Play the Merle Haggard Quiz
“He Walks With Me (In The Garden)”

I come to the garden alone
While the dew is still on the roses
And the voice I hear falling on my ear
      The son of God discloses.

And he walks with me and he talks with me
And he tells me I am his own
And the joy we share as we tarry there
      None other has ever known.

He speaks and the sound of his voice is so sweet
      The birds hush their singing
And the melody that he gave to me
      Within my heart is ringing.

And he walks with me and he talks with me
And he tells me I am his own
And the joy we share as we tarry there
      None other has ever known.

I’d stay in the garden with him
Though the night around me is falling
But He bids me go through the voice of woe
His voice to me is calling…
I just did a google and this song,as I suspected, is much older than Mr Haggard, same lyrics.

  2. Going through the Bible with 100 Words feels like David is still with us. There is no one I know of like David Mainse!

  3. Could you comment re: ‘sons of God’ and daughters of humans having children and their ‘race’ was called the ‘Nephilim’?

    • Alec, if you click on the “Study This” button on the Bible Gateway page of the daily Bible reading, there are several commentaries on the passage. Matthew Henry’s Commentary is especially good, and time-tested.
May God bless you and lead you (and all of us) into all Truth as we study His Word. In Jesus’s wonderful name, amen

  4. Alec, this is what I just read in the “Day unto Day” commentary written by Nizar Shaheen. “The most likely interpretation for this that the men from the godly line of Seth corrupted themselves by not keeping pure and separate from the sinful and worldly line of Cain, so they were pulled down… Great wickedness resulted from these marriages, for from the offspring came giants who ruled with great strength, and who led the people into sin and ultimate ruin.” I presume they were the Nephilim race as the name means “giants” in the KJV, according to the Zondervan Bible Dictionary. Love the song Karen and William. Blessings to all.

  5. God walked with Enoch; Thank You Lord, Your word tells us You never leave us or forsake us. I too like the song “In the Garden”!

Thank you for continuing with this daily manna Ron and Ann!
I did not receive June 30th, but will try and access it.

  6. Somehow I thought today was the 30th, but it is Friday the 29th of JUne

Thank you for this blog: being in the hospital for a week, but am back on track now..

Have blessed day on this 29th day of June!!

  7. Just wondering how Noah could offer sacrifices when he built an alter to God. The animals/birds must have reproduced in the Ark?

    • It’s explained in the next chaper:
“When everything was ready, the Lord said to Noah, “Go into the boat with all your family, for among all the people of the earth, I can see that you alone are righteous. Take with you seven pairs—male and female—of each animal I have approved for eating and for sacrifice, and take one pair of each of the others. Also take seven pairs of every kind of bird. There must be a male and a female in each pair to ensure that all life will survive on the earth after the flood.””
      (Genesis 7:1-3)
