Today’s┬áReading: Amos 7-8

Click scripture link to read online or HERE to listen online (then click the symbol of the audio speaker above the scripture portion).

With a giant trunk and boughs towering 60 feet high, a gnarled sycamore near Jericho’s main square is believed to be over 2,000 years old, and could be the very tree that the hated tax collector Zacchaeus climbed to get a glimpse of Jesus (Luke 19:1-5). In today’s reading, Amos says that he was a tender of sycamore fruit (Amos 7:14).

Key Verses: Amos 7:14b,15

I was no prophet, nor was I the son of a prophet, but I was a herdsman and a tender of sycamore fruit. Then the Lord took me as I followed the flock, and the Lord said to me, “Go prophesy to my people Israel!”

Amaziah, a priest serving the northern kingdom of Israel, tried to shut Amos up. When he realized that Amos would not be quiet, he tried to send this prophet/preacher to the southern kingdom of Judah. With stubborn resolve Amos refused to leave, continuing to speak truth to power. Neither king nor priest could stop him! The call of God on his life was all consuming. As it was with Amos, so it is with those who hear the Word of the Lord today. God, through Jesus, says to us, “GO, therefore, and make disciples of all the nations!” (Matthew 28:18-20). Mark writes these Words of Jesus, “GO into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15). Like Amos, true followers of Jesus feel compelled to “GO” and/or support those who “GO,” if we are obedient to God. The results of obedience are summed up in the last verse of Mark’s Gospel, “And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through accompanying signs. Amen!” (Mark 16:20). As Amos tells us, the worst famine ever is not the lack of food to eat physically, but the famine “of hearing the Words of the Lord!” (Amos 8:11b).

Lord God, I’m listening to You! I hear You! Because I have called You my Lord and God, I must obey You or my decision to give my life to You is a lie! I pray for grace to “GO” and “Prophesy.” I remember that prophesy for Your followers, Jesus, is as John said in Revelation 19:10b, “For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.” It is in the Name of Jesus that I pray this prayer for world revolution, turning the whole world to Christ! Amen!!!

Dr. Oswald J. Smith, the man I consider to be the greatest 20th century supporter of Christian world missions and sender of missionaries, said, “Why should anyone hear the Gospel twice, when millions have never heard it once!” During his years as pastor of The People’s Church in Toronto (1928-1959), huge banners with such statements would hang on the walls of his church. Hundreds of missionaries were sent all over the world, and at missions conventions, faith promises were made to give millions of dollars to send them. I recognize that the passion that consumed Amos is the same as I find in great Pastors/Evangelists and in visionary believers in Jesus everywhere. The Apostle Paul wrote, “How shall they preach unless they are sent!” (Romans 10:15).

Crossroads Christian Communications is a ministry with a worldwide mandate from God to proclaim “the testimony of Jesus” 24/7 over the entire world. Norma-Jean and I are praying daily for the Crossroads mission and giving monthly.

Yours for every one of us to rise to the challenge in obedience to those compelling words, “GO!” “PREACH!”

  1. We are spreading the seeds for You, Jesus–on earth as it is in heaven. We proclaim Your Glory so all may know and call You–Sovereign Lord of all–our comforter, our lifter, our defender, our protector, our One and Only God. Wishing all saints peace, love, harmony, and a blessed day in the Lord.

    He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.

    • the prayer line to 100 Huntley Street is changed! It is a recorded voice only; no real person on the other end; I find this very troublesome, am I the only one who feels this way?
      the prayer line used to work this way: you would phone 1-866-273-4444 and a real person with a real voice would answer, gave their name and ask how they can pray for us……
      I found this prayer line full of empathy, very professional, very caring, very audible, very God fearing people…..there were times when I did not know what to pray and the prayer partner on the other end would just read Scripture out loud and usually something would be read that was very fitting for my situation….
      what has happened?

      • The prayer lines are not blocked; there is no message; they are open 24/7. I just called to check, confirmed with the lovely prayer person who answered and prayed with me for this misinformation to be corrected on the blog. Perhaps you are calling the wrong phone number, or misdialed, Sah:

        24/7 PRAYER: 1-866-273-4444

  2. Challenging message today. Thank you David. Rob I heard you from yesterday and am praying for all those who voted righteously in the last House meeting. We do need to be concerned for our country. Should be concerned about all in our government as well. Thanks for all posts. God bless you. I believe God is seeing us and hearing all our prayers. Amen! Woke up to a fresh blanket of snow this morning.

  3. Amos 7: 2-3, 5-6 reminds us of the power of intercessory prayer. Things are NEVER beyond God’s mercy and compassion.

    Like Amos, we also need to intercede for our great country and ask God for forgiveness for the sins of our nation. May God have mercy on Canada and pour out His Spirit on her bringing souls to repentance and many putting their faith and trust in Him! Oh God! Do it Lord, for your honour and glory! Amen!

  4. Amen, Rob, Ger and Luisa. We pray for Trudeau’s leadership of our country and the detrimental decisions having been made of late. We pray for God’s mercy on our land and the hearts of all people, here.

  5. yes indeed! We need to pray for the leaders in North America, from the far north to the far south; from the far west to the far east;
    this hemisphere belongs to God, He created it; He laid out the plans He has for all mankind;
    It humbles me to know that God knows everything that is happening; He did from the beginning; and He will continue unto the end of this world……

    I also pray for all the praying people on this blog; I am very thankful to hear from all the people and very happy to be able to pray for others,
    I appreciate so very much when people pray for me……It brings tears to my eyes;
    thank you and God bless everyone……

    I still have ants! Lord please show me where they are entering the building; I need money Lord to get someone in to take care of the ants….TY Lord,

    I am going swimming tonight, I thank the Lord for giving me swimming from a broken leg…..
    still haven’t heard from my daughter, please pray she will call me or send an e mail, she has both addresses…thank you Lord
    In Jesus Name I Pray amen amen amen

  6. Dear Luisa
    you have a point perhaps they need more volunteers, I just would have liked an explanation, I so appreciate the prayer lines and I am so thankful when another human being answers……the nice part is that the Prayer lines get to know a person and it seems to help with putting request out for others to pray about……
    God bless everyone today, I pray that \those needing healing will get healing immediately.
    God bless……

  7. Sah, just was looking at these glue ant traps that I got from the dollar store. Can glue them on the wall, under your sink, etc. Maybe then you can see where they are coming from.
