Today’s┬áReading: 2 Chronicles 35

The Great Sphinx of Giza, commonly referred to as the Sphinx, is a limestone statue of a reclining or couchant sphinx that stands on the Giza Plateau on the west bank of the Nile in Giza, Egypt. In today’s reading, King Josiah unwisely decides to pick a fight with an Egyptian Pharaoh.

Key Verses: 2 Chronicles 35:1, 22b

Now Josiah kept a Passover to the Lord in Jerusalem, and they slaughtered the Passover lambs on the fourteenth day of the first month….[Josiah] did not heed the words of Necho from the mouth of God. So he came to fight in the Valley of Megiddo.

At 26 years old, King Josiah served God faithfully, following in detail God’s instructions for the celebration of the Passover. This was to be the annual observance for remembering the time when God delivered the Children of Israel from slavery in Egypt (Exodus 12:1-14). No doubt Josiah learned how to do this from the Bible Scrolls which were discovered in the Temple. Josiah, as recorded in 2 Chronicles 34:31, had read aloud the entire book in the hearing of all the leaders of the people. Josiah was obedient to the words he had read.

But when it came to another encounter of the Children of Israel with Egypt, there is no record of Josiah praying for guidance in his decision to engage Pharaoh Necho in war. We can learn from this tragic end to Josiah’s life that we need to add prayer and waiting on God before we make our decisions…waiting on God for His directions. Poor and destructive decisions will result from failure to hear clearly from God. Amazingly, God warned Josiah through the mouth of Necho, but still Josiah stubbornly went into battle.

O Lord Jesus, teach me to pray as You taught Your disciples (at this point let’s pray “The Lord’s Prayer,” slowly and carefully, found in Luke 11:1-4). Amen!!!

In thinking about what Josiah did when he was 26, I was reminded of one decision I made at the same age, about which I prayed a great deal. When I felt the “go-ahead” from God, I called Wes Millar, formerly the accountant at Healey Motors in Pembroke (where I had worked when I was 16). Now, 10 years later, Wes was a co-owner of a car dealership in Cornwall, Ontario. Someone had told me that they saw a used school bus on his car lot. After our chat, Wes and his partners decided to donate the bus for our Deep River Sunday School. I was so excited as I went to buy a bus ticket to travel to Cornwall to pick up the bus. As I drove it back, I could see it in my mind’s eye…the bus filled with Sunday School students. That’s what happened! On one side of the bus I painted the words, “TEACH ME THY WAYS, O LORD. PSALM 86:11.” On the other side I put the words, “STUDY TO SHOW THYSELF APPROVED UNTO GOD. 2 TIMOTHY 2:15.” For at least the next three years, that bus ran steadily every Sunday morning from Deep River to Deux Rivieres and back, and in the afternoon to Chalk River and back. Our new little Sunday School in Deep River grew to almost 150 students, and in Chalk River we reached another 50 children. God was in that decision to ask for the bus. He taught us His ways, and we studied His Word. His ways are discovered only through much prayer and complete obedience.

Yours for reading and studying God’s Word, obeying God’s Word, and praying until we are convinced we’ve heard from God concerning decisions which will have far-reaching effects,

The Temple of Luxor was originally founded by Pharaoh Amenophis III but altered in later years by Tutankhamun, Horemheb, and Ramses II. At night the temple is illuminated with yellow lights to reveal a golden halo around the ruins and statues.

  1. Thank you David Mainse for this blog! I enjoy your 100 personal words every day! It is truly amazing how God has lead your ministry around the world!
We need to encourage each other to keep dreaming! We need to encourage young people, young families to dream…we need to let our young families know that they are very important to God and we will continue to pray for them and their dreams! Our young families need to know that we care for them and that we love and care about their children and their lives and their dreams!

fires still burning in British Columbia, Canada, praying for rain, and praying for people to be aware of how a discarded light cigarette can cause millions of dollars in damages!
I pray that healing will come to those who are ill; I pray for peace in our neighbourhoods, I pray the Holy Spirit will continue to call, gather and enlighten people to the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ, our Healer, Our Provider, our Saviour of the world! amen

  2. Great testimony about your Sunday School Pastor David and good prayer Sah. Need to keep BC in prayer and I would like prayer today for a project here at the house. Thank you and God bless.

    • Holding you in prayer, today, Ger, for your project around the house; for safety and protection and direction.

  3. Praying for continued rain and weather changes to bring an immediate end to the fires in BC, by the power of our God. Amen to your message, David. Blessings and prayers to all saints of the blog–how beautiful you are!

Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

  4. Agreeing with Sah and Ger’s prayers for BC. I also ask the Lord for the project at Ger’s house. Dear heavenly Father I pray that your Holy Spirit would give direction to those who are involved in this project. You know that it is important to Ger, so I pray that your will be done and the project will be completed. I pray this in Jesus name, Amen.

  5. Pastor David thank you for sharing about your Sunday School bus, I wish there were more people like you in today’s world. A lot of our children and grandchildren are missing out now, because so many of the churches have done away with Sunday School. I am thanking God that our church still has one, my brother’s church would have one, but there are no children in the congregation. Blessings to all, Eleanor M.

  6. From Streams in the Desert, Cowman, July 13th

“The moment has come when you must get off the perch of distrust, out of the nest of seeming safety, and onto the wings of faith; just such a time as comes to the bird when it must begin to try the air. It may seem as though you must drop to the earth; so it may seem to the fledgling. It, too, may feel very like falling; but it does not fall — it’s pinions give it support, or, if they fail, the parent bird sweeps under and bears it upon its wings.

“Even so will God bear you. Only trust Him; “thou shalt be holden up.” “Well, but,” you say, “am I to cast myself upon nothing?” That is what the bird seems to have to do; but we know the air is there, and the air is not so unsubstantial as it seems. And you know the promises of God are there, and they are not unsubstantial at all. “But it seems an unlikely thing to come about that my poor weak soul should be girded with such strength.” Has God said it shall? “That my tempted, yielding nature shall be victor in the strife.” Has God said it shall? “That my timorous, trembling heart shall find peace?” Has God said it shall?

“For, if He has, you surely do not mean to give Him the lie! Hath he spoken, and shall He not do it? If you have gotten a word — “a sure word” of promise — take it implicitly, trust it absolutely. And this sure word you have; nay, you have more — you have Him who speaks the word confidently.”

“Yea, I say unto you,” trust Him.
    –J. B. Figgis, M. A.

  7. Thank you, David for this Bible reading. I like the comments .Praying for rain to put an end of the B.C. fires. Our trust is in God.

    • I heard there was quite a down pour in Prince George yesterday…but joining all in praying substantial rain..south towards Williams Lake..where the fire is about 10 km from this town of 14,000.. and if there is lightning, it will not start more fires.. praying the rain will help put out the fires; also praying for peace as many stand ready to evacuate, encouragement and help for those who lost their homes or stand in uncertainty after having to evacuate and not knowing if they have a house to go back to.

  8. Blessings my blog family Pastor mainse and your amaxing slice of blessing for the world in your daily walk …God bless u all…..Thank u my prayer warriors ……keep the battle fierce. ….. prayer of victory.

  9. Agreeing with prayers for BC & for Ger’s project. I so want to seek God’s direction in every decision. I pray that I will remember when situations come up. I have a property for sale along the Trent Waterway & I am hoping for a quick sale. Hard to keep grass cut etc. as it is 3 hrs from my home & there has been so much rain this year.

  10. Agreeing with all the prayer requests today and I also am asking for prayer for the healing of an acquaintance’s little girl Her name is Elise and she is only a little over a year old. There is something wrong with a kidney and she has already had some surgery for it before as I found out recently. She is scheduled for another surgery around the 20th of July.

So, please blog friends pray for the healing of little Elise in the precious name of Jesus

    • Praying for Elise. Father God, I ask for Your Healing Touch on this little child. Give wisdom, understanding & skill to her doctors. Draw the parents to Yourself & comfort them. Amen

  11. Thank you dear saints for my house project today. Everything went so well and met all my expectations. God bless you. Lord we present little Elsie to you tonight that you will touch her little body and restore her kidney completely. In your Name, Lord Jesus, Amen. Also that you will sell your property quickly Doreen and that you will send rain to BC soon and help all these people who are affected by these fires and meet their need.

  12. David,
My husband was sorting through things in our basement recently and came across an old CD/DVD pkg of Keith Greens ministry. The DVD included Keith being interviewed by you on 100Huntley Street. What a timeless testimony and blessing it was to watch. We named our son over twenty years ago the same name as his son, Josiah David because the name of two righteous kings sounded like a good name. Todays reading is inspirational to be reminded of King Josiah and how he did right in the sight of the Lord for the most part in spite of all the idolatry around him and what can happen if we aren’t diligent in our prayers for God to direct our paths.
Thank-you to you and the ministry team for your ministry then and now, it is making a difference.

  13. Unfortunately we are not receiving the daily 100 Words by email effective the beginning of this week.
