HOLINESS UNTO THE LORD

Today’s Reading: Exodus 39

The Hebrew inscription on the headdress worn by the High Priest reads, “Holiness Unto the Lord.” In this photo, taken at the 2012 Crossroads exhibit of the Tabernacle, the High Priest is applying the blood from the sacrifice onto the horns of the Brazen Altar. Rev. Rick Hiebert portrayed the High Priest for thousands of visitors and also taught about the Tabernacle in the smaller “Tent of Meeting.”

Key Verse: Exodus 39:30

Then they made the plate of the holy crown of pure gold, and wrote on it an inscription like the engraving of a signet: HOLINESS TO THE LORD.

The chorus of a hymn we sang when I was a boy has these lyrics:

“Holiness unto the Lord is our watchword and song. Holiness unto the Lord as we travel along. We’ll sing it, shout it, loud and long, Holiness unto the Lord, now and forever.”

Israel could have sung this song. However, I think it was a 19th century Methodist hymn. This key verse was fastened to the turban of the High Priest. Our great High Priest, the Lord Jesus Christ, appears on our behalf before the throne of God, having lived a holy life without any sin whatsoever. This is the reason that His offering of His very life’s blood to the Holy God is accepted on our behalf. Please look up 1 Peter 1:13-21 and “meditate on these things” (Philippians 4:8). This entire passage from 1 Peter is a description of a holy life.

PRAYER FOR TODAY:

Dear Lord Jesus, I want so very much to live a holy life. So often I fall short of living as You lived. I pray for You to live in and through me. The Apostle Paul wrote, “For to me, to live is Christ” (Philippians 1:21a). By Your grace my life is Your life. Amen!

100 PERSONAL WORDS:

I struggled in my late teens with the “holiness” teaching of the Bible. Then I discovered Romans chapter six. Studying this chapter, I discovered the secret of holy living. My old life of sin died with Christ on the Cross. It’s a fact! I believe it! My daily commitment is to quote Paul’s confession, “I am crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me” (Galatians 2:20). Having made this confession for myself before God, I believe it. This activates God’s power, which enables me to live a holy life each day. The operative action word here is “DAILY.” Doing this blog early every morning helps me. I pray that your reading of this blog will help you too.

Yours, not for self righteousness, but for Jesus’ holiness lived in me,

David

P.S. Here is a 100 Huntley Street video from four years ago when we had the Old Testament Tabernacle replica on display in the back parking lot of the Crossroads Centre in Burlington, Ontario. My son Ron is interviewing the man who played the role of the High Priest (click HERE).

  1. Good morning. I’m reading a book written by Henry Drummond, The Greatest Thing in the World, and he quotes the idea behind Paul’s statement. “To me to live is Christ”. There’s another quote/poem in this book about people who don’t come to know the Lord:

I lived for myself, I thought for myself,
    For myself, and none beside,
Just as if Jesus had never lived,
As if He had never died.

I can highly recommend this book……very spiritual.
    Blessings.

  2. So interesting and refreshing to read the details that made up the Priestly garment. How that the all the twelve tribes are placed over the heart! in the breastplate. The jewels representing each one!!
This scripture in Isaiah 61:10 came to mind: “I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for He has clothed me with the garments of salvation, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decked himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorned herself with her jewels.”

Thank you for the link with Ron interviewed the man representing the High Priest. A great ministry took place through that replica of the tabernacle!!

  3. TY Lord for the good sleep!

reading book by Nick Vujicic called LIMITLESS, Nick was born with no legs/arms….
Page 21-11 “Helen Keller lost her sight and hearing due to an illness before she was 2 years old, but she went on to become a world-renowned author, speaker, social activist. This great woman said true happiness comes through “fidelity to a worthy purpose”
what does that mean? For me (Nick) it means being faithful to your gifts, growing them, sharing them, and taking joy in them. It means moving beyong the pursuit of self-satisfaction to the more mature search for meaning and fulfillment.
the greatest rewards come when you give something of yourself. Its about bettering the lives of others, being a part of something bigger than you, and making a postivie difference. You don;t have to be Mother Teresa to do that. You can even be a DISABLED guy and make an impact
your own search for meaning and fulfillment may still be underway. But I don’t think you can really feel fulfilled without serving others. Each of us hopes to put our talents and knowledge to use for some benefit beyond just paying the bills.
in today’s world even though we may be fully conscious of the spiritual emptiness of material attainment, we will need reminders that fulfillment has nothing to do with having possessions. People certanily try the strangest menthods for attaining fufullment. They may drink a 6 pack of beer. they may drug themselves into oblivion. they may alter their bodies to achieve some arbitrary standard of beauty.
they may work their whole lives to reach the pinnacle of success only to have it mercilessly yanked from them in the next second”

I found those comments very interesting and I also became so AWARE OF THE COMMERCIALS THAT BOMBARD OUR MEDIA, IF YOU DON’T HAVE THIS OR THAT….YOU WILL NOT BE HAPPY!

I ask that we pray for our young people, their families, pray the Holy Spirit enters into the hearts of people, hear their confessions and to help turn them in the direction of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ who loves us unconditionally! amen amen amen

  4. Yes, the priest’s garments are very special. Good to hear Ron’s interview with Rev. Rick Hiebert who was at Bible School when I was. Found the teaching about the tabernacle and its contents very inspirational and would make a good sermon. saying Amen to your posting Sah. Thinking about you and praying for you David. God bless you!

    • Actually it did- in the OT God gave them very precise instructions how the camp should be set, which tribes should be east or west or south or north of the Tabernacle. Well if they followed those instructions literally, meaning not camping northeast, when God said north, they figured out the 12 tribes based on the numbers given for them in the Book of Numbers the camp would form a giant cross with the Tabernacle right in the center — so when Baalam ( not sure of the spelling) stood on the mountain top trying to curse them for profit, he couldn’t– why? because he was staring down on a giant cross. I read this in a little book I got once from Huntley St. called Hidden Treasures in the Biblical Text by Chuck Missler– I am sure a google search might lead to a better explanation, but yes from the air people the camp of Israel looked like a cross.

  5. Amen to all today’s comments. Glad to hear your comments Sah. Praying for your improving health dear David. I would have enjoyed viewing the Tabernacle at Crossroads. Blessings to all fellow saints.

  6. Donna your blog gives me the goosebumps!!!!!!!! WOW! Yes, it is hard to curse the world when looking at the Cross! Let us continue to pray for each other, for our neighbours, please pray for Darcy, pray the Holy Spirit touches his life and that he would begin to be a nice person, no attitude, just a very kind, caring person..respectful to others, the Lord knows what this person needs…TY Lord for hearing all our prayers this day…..In Jesus Name We Pray AMEN
