Key Verse: Exodus 11:5

And all the firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sits on his throne, even to the firstborn of the female servant who is behind the handmill, and all the firstborn of the animals.

Eighty years earlier, the grandfather of the Exodus Pharaoh ordered the death of all Israel’s boy babies. Moses is now threatened with death (Ex. 10:28-29). Some say that the decision for the final plague came from the mouth of Pharaoh himself. In verse eight it states that Moses was “hot with anger” when he left this last meeting with Pharaoh. According to Numbers 12:3, “Moses was very meek.” Meekness means “strength under control.” When all else fails, God brings severe judgment. We cannot trifle with God or view Him as a celestial Santa Claus. We are to love God and fear God at the same time. There is a tension here that brings balance. We embrace God, who cares for His people, but at the same time, God, who will accomplish His purposes, has the right to pronounce and execute judgment.

PRAYER FOR TODAY:

Almighty and eternal God, Your judgment fell upon Your firstborn and only begotten Son, Jesus, our Saviour and our Lord. I thank You with all my heart that Your love and Your judgment came together at the Cross. You suffered greater pain than any of us can begin to comprehend. I love You and I fear You. I come boldly before You because Jesus took my place. In His Name I pray. Amen!

100 PERSONAL WORDS:

The Children of Israel were slaves. In slave-based economies, slaves represented the greatest wealth of the nation. I’ve watched several times the movie on the life of that great Christian, William Wilberforce, who brought about the deliverance of the slaves in Britain and throughout the Empire. If you’ve not seen this or read the book by Eric Metaxas (Eric has served as our100 Huntley Street USA host) on which the movie was based, I urge you to avail yourself of his history of this modern Moses (find the book HERE or the movie HERE).

Bob Hogan was my age. He’s ageless now as he passed into the presence of his Lord and Saviour two years ago. When Norma-Jean and I built our home on Dog Lake following my decision to step aside from hosting the daily 100 Huntley Street telecast, Bob and his wonderful family were a great help. We’ve sold that place because I did not want to leave Norma-Jean 200 miles away from our children after my death, which was predicted by the cancer specialist to have happened by March 2014. God had a different plan for me. Before Bob passed through the fine curtain that separates us from eternity, I heard Bob was in hospital and may not live, so I rode my motorcycle to Kingston to see him. As I knelt by his bed, I said, “Bob, the last time I visited you we did business with God. Right?” He nodded a definite Yes! (Bob prayed a most sincere prayer of faith for his eternal salvation during that last visit). Then I said, “Now we are going to pray for God’s healing by more years here or by entering into eternal life with Jesus in Heaven.” Again the oxygen mask he was wearing almost came off his face as he nodded vigorously. His eyes spoke volumes about his confidence in God. Below is a photograph Reynold took a few years back of Bob and a very special friend. I’ll see you soon my brother in faith.

Yours for freedom to do the will of God,

David

P.S. Thanks for all the birthday greetings for Norma-Jean and me. We are surrounded by loving people. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

My friend Bob Hogan and his dog. Bob is now with his Lord.

  2. David ,you and Norma jean have been in my heart and prayers especially in these days of celebration of your life in Christ.
You have blessed my life for so many years and still do; your blog is the first I go to when I awaken . I am so thankful for your ongoing ministry and service to
    God and the nations.
Thank you ! Forever more may you be abundantly blessed .
    Gratefully Margarethe

    • Yes, I am very thankful to David and Norma Jean as well!
Am loving the vlog and am learning so much from it and the bible reading every day.
I still remember Norma Jean’s cassette of her songs, although my copy of it was broken. I still miss it, but don’t think they are available anymore.
Anyway, I wish both of them a very happy birthday and year ahead!

      • Hi Lois! Just to let you know I went to a yard sale today and there was three of Norma Jean’s tapes. If I had your address I would be glad to make copies and send them to you.

  3. Thank you David, your blog helps me to slow down long enough to digest the Word instead of rushing through devotions. And your personal stories always inspire me so much. Today you reminded me that sometimes it is simple things that bring people to the Lord. Just the give and take of being a neighbor. That really moves me that he is in heaven now because of your decision to move to his vicinity for a period of time.

  4. Happy belated birthday Norma-Jean. I still think of the wonderful journey I went with your group to Israel in 2012. God bless the both of you.

    Dear Reverend Mainse,

    Please note,

The Teaching of the Twelve Apostles says no abortion.
The Bible says God hates divorce.

But many Protestant women voted Liberal in the latest federal election.

    They are pro-divorce and pro-abortion.

It is some nonsense about freedom in Christ.

Reverends who marry these women get muzzled and don’t speak about the
    Evils of abortion and divorce.

I guess you can please women or God.

    Try to do both.

Please your wife and children, but please God more.

Reverends, become un-muzzled and work with government, toward reducing the amount of time of a pregnancy when an abortion can be done with a law.

This will help your family line.
    You are Conservative, right.

    Thanks.

    Truthfully,

    Please keep on.

  6. Prayed your Prayer for today Pastor Mainse.

May God be merciful to all who call upon Him, in Jesus Almighty Name
    I pray, Amen!

  7. May God bless you and Norma Jean in creative and special ways! I hope you both had a wonderful birthday weekend with friends and family. Thank you so much for this daily blog (my second time around) and all of the years of ministry on Canadian television…I and many, many others truly appreciate your faithfulness to God’s calling.

  8. HE (JESUS) PAID A DEBT I COULD NOT PAY…WHAT A GREAT SACRIFICE!!! I OWE IT ALL TO YOU JESUS…HOW AWESOME…INCOMPREHENSIBLE TO THE HUMAN MIND…HARD TO FATHOM…BUT YOU (JESUS) DID IT ALL FOR ME!!!
THANK YOU FATHER IN HEAVEN FOR YOUR GREAT LOVE FOR US…THE WORLD!!!

  9. What a Powerful prayer…thank you for your words of wisdom and guidance David in and through their daily bread!!

  10. I’ve been in hospital twice in the last week. I was reading the book “World Changers: Live to Serve” which was inspired by William Wilberforce and the Amazing Grace Movie! It is by Bob Beltz and Walt Kallestad. Missed your birthday celebration @ Crossroads but I saw FB and email and some TV of it! Would love to have seen the Rutledge family. I expect to be okay and I pray that you will both be well for some time to come! May God bless you and the family and especially the boys who help you with the blog (and their ministries as well).

  11. Must say I love birthdays as they do seem to make us feel extra special on our special day. Belated “happy birthday” to you and to Norma Jean. I was at a yard sale and picked up a bargain with the purchase of three (3) tapes of Norma Jean! Nice way to commemorate the special day and hours of music to my ears and those I share it with. Thank you so very much. God continue to bless you both as I know He will.

  12. Lovely picture of your friend Bob with his dog. What a special friend you were to him.
Asking for prayers of healing for me as my chemo drug has not worked. I am going next week to see if another treatment is available.
Thank you brothers and sisters in Christ.
