A boat trip down Egypt’s Nile River is one of the best ways to see Egypt. Today’s reading mentions “The river of Egypt.”

Key Verses: Amos 9:9

For surely I will command,

And will sift the house of Israel among all nations,

As grain is sifted in a sieve;

Yet not the smallest grain shall fall to the ground.

God pays attention to “the smallest grain.” Nothing escapes His attention! It is impossible that God could be untrue to His pure and holy character. God has provided a substitutionary payment for the sin of the entire human race…past, present and future…by the death of His sinless Son, and our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Sin violates God’s holiness, but His justice has been satisfied through Jesus, and we are made right before God when we repent and ask for His forgiveness.

Amos ends his book with five promises from God! God heals sick people and nations. God will (1) “Raise up,” (2) “Repair,” (3) “Rebuild,” (4) give the right to “Possess,” and (5) “Bring back the captives.” We all love happy endings! Thank You God, and thank you, Amos!!!

PRAYER FOR TODAY:

Lord God, I confess my 24/7 need for a constant attitude of repentance. As John wrote, “If we [ I ] say that we [ I ] have [present tense] no sin, we [ I ] deceive ourselves [myself] and the truth is not in us [me]” (1 John 1:8). Yes, Lord Jesus, I thank You for Your promise of salvation. I pray that prayer that You, Lord Jesus, guaranteed would justify me in Your holy Presence, “God be merciful to me, a sinner” (Luke 18:9-14). Amen!!!

100 PERSONAL WORDS:

The famous actor, Mickey Rooney, died at 93. I want to watch some old movies of Mickey from the late 1930’s and 1940’s because I think he’ll look like that now in Heaven, and I want to recognize him when, by God’s grace, I join him. The last time I saw Mickey was in Lakeland, Florida. He was in his late eighties then. He was singing, playing the piano, and even dancing a two step. I purchased a memento picture album, and Norma-Jean and I got in the lineup for his signature. Just before he signed, he looked up and peered intently at me through eyes which were failing, and said, “Is that you, David?” We had a happy reunion. Back in the late 1970’s Mickey was performing live on stage at a Toronto theatre. In the wee hours of the night he could not sleep. He turned on TV, watched a 100 Huntley Street repeat show, called in to our prayer line, and one of our prayer partners led him to Christ. I found out the next day when he was being interviewed on a live talk show, and he told this story. He said…

“There was this guy, Mainse, brains, or something, talking about Jesus. His guest was an Indian Chief [Bruce Thum], who held up his five fingers on his right hand and explained the word grace with an acrostic. The Chief said, [here Mickey held up his right hand with his thumb and 4 fingers extended] ‘GRACE means God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense!’ I prayed the prayer, and I know God has given me His grace.”

That afternoon I found out where Mickey was staying and called him, asking if I could come to see him. He joyfully welcomed me and we became friends. Every time he was anywhere near Toronto, we would get together for prayer and a great visit. Mickey had been married and divorced at least seven times when I met him. His first 40 years in showbiz were the hardest. The last 30-35 years of his life were difficult at times, but God continued to give Mickey G-R-A-C-E !!! I’ll see you soon my friend!

Yours as a participant in God’s wonderful, marvellous, matchless GRACE,

David

P.S. I suggest showing one of Mickey’s old movies to children and grandchildren. Then open the blog and click here for a preview of one of our animated productions, produced by Bruce Stacey, where Mickey Rooney (his personality, input and voice) portrayed the character of “Bullseye: The Rock that Bopped Goliath.” The episode is called “Splat Ball Square Off.” Check out our other GodRocks children’s productions (where the rocks and stones of the Bible come to life). They are at our e-store (click here).

  1. Amen to Mickey Rooney! I love that story, David, and look forward to the movie. Yes, for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted. Amen! Wishing all saints a blessed day in the Lord!

This morning’s message from Streams in the Desert, April 8th is something I feel pressed to share. Perhaps it will resonate with someone who needs to be rekindled, being “Thankful for the Thorns.”

“Therefore I am content with weaknesses, with insults, with troubles, with persecutions and difficulties for the sake of Christ, for whenever I am weak, then I am strong.” 2 Cor 12:10 NET

“The literal translation of this verse gives a startling emphasis to it, and makes it speak for itself with a force that we have probably never realized. Here It is: “Therefore I take pleasure in being without strength, in insults, in being pinched, in being chased about, in being cooped up in a corner for Christ’s sake; for when I am without strength, then am I dynamite.”

“Here is the secret of Divine all-sufficiency, to come to the end of everything in ourselves and in our circumstances. When we reach this place, we will stop asking for sympathy because of our hard situation or bad treatment, for we will recognize these things as the very conditions of our blessing, and we will turn from them to God and find in them a claim upon Him.” A. B. Simpson

“George Matheson, the well-known blind preacher of Scotland, who recently went to be with the Lord, said: “My God, I have never thanked Thee for my thorn. I have thanked Thee a thousand times for my roses, but not once for my thorn. I have been looking forward to a world where I shall get compensation for my cross; but I have never thought of my cross as itself a present glory.”

“Teach me the glory of my cross; teach me the value of my thorn. Show me that I have climbed to Thee by the path of pain. Show me that my tears have made my rainbows.”

“Alas for him who never sees
The stars shine through the cypress trees.”

    • Beverlee, i am the one “cooped up in a corner”, and yes I did need this reminder today. Thank you for posting Streams in the Desert today.

  2. Great story of Mickey Rooney’s conversion. You used to be one of my favorite actors in my younger days and I still remember a little rhyme he had. Thank God, he found the Lord or the Lord found him. Read todays’ devotional from “Streams in the Desert” too Beverlee so the Lord is speaking but it takes time for healing to get there. God bless you all!

  3. This story of Micky Rooney brought tears to my eyes. The Lord works in so many ways. There is. Ever to much sin in ones life that God in His mercy, grace and love can,t reach out to someone like Mickey,
    So enjoy your blog David.

  4. Loved Micky Rooney. he was very talented. We (my adopted Native son and I) met Bruce Thumb who dubbed my son, “Prince Shining Bright Eyes”! I always remind him of that! He was about 5 at the time. Now he’s 35 and a strong Christian man, praise God.

  5. Enjoyed hearing the story of his salvation once again Pastor David!! Thank you!

  6. well finally we are hearing the Story about Mickey Rooney! David you mentioned last year about Rooney and you were going to post the info the next day on your blog, but you didn’t and I wondered about the story!
PRAISE GOD THAT THE HOLY SPIRIT SPOKE AND ROONEY LISTENED AND TURNED ON THE TV! THAT WAS A MIRACLE!
Lord the only thing I can do is dance for joy! God NEVER closes the door on any person from coming to faith at any age! We need to listen to that “samll voice” that calls, gathers and enlightens and sanctifies the whole Christian church on earth and keeps it with Jesus Christ in the one true faith!
    Yes indeed; G R A C E

  7. David,….I know you are waiting on God’s guidance, and praying for Crossroads\100 Huntley Street and I am humbled that you would ask blog readers for counsel. These comments are not meant to counsel but just want to share what has been on my heart since reading your previous blogs. Through your obedience to God through His Word you have received much wisdom and knowledge. As followers of your blog we have only been able to see glimpses of this. What I would love to see on the telecast is a teaching from you. You have so much valuable wisdom for our younger generation, and still for us seniors, that somehow it must be shared. As you reach this next decade of your life, I know all generations will benefit from what you have to teach. When I look back over the years of viewing 100 Huntley Street I learned so much from the times when scriptures were ‘taught’. I recall one time when you studied the book of Acts and today when I received the Compass Magazine there was a letter from a lady who found Jesus through teachings of Jim and Nizaar. I know everyone on the telecast now is filled with the love of Jesus, but, for me, it is just not the same without someone from the ‘Manse’ family. I prayerfully wait to see how Our Lord will guide you in the months to come. Darlene.

  8. Mr. David Mainse If you would like to share the Gospel with the world, it might be a great idea to have some programs on MARRIAGE

  9. the internet did a Blimp”
People need to hear about MARRIAGE, What does the Bible say about MARRIAGE?
People need to hear about HOMOSEXUAL relationships! What does the Bible say about HOMOSEXUALS?
People need to hear about STEALING, LYING, life styles! What does the Bible say about STEALING, LYING life styles!
People need to hear about TATOOS, PIERCING the body! What does the Bible say about TATOOS, PIERCING the body!
People need to hear about DRINKING, SMOKING, DRUGS, in our bodies! What does the Bible say about SMOKING, DRINKING,DRUGS in the body?
People need to hear about MURDER in our lives! What does the Bible say about those who MURDER!
People need to hear about SEX BEFORE MARRIAGE! What does the Bible says about SEX BEFORE MARRIAGE?

People need to hear about how GOD MATTERS IN OUR LIVES! They will only hear if someone talks about this aspect. a TV program perhaps 1/2 hour long would be a VERY VERY GOOD THING FOR THE PEOPLE TO HEAR!

Never assume because of modern technology that everyones knows everything, that is NOT TRUE! People need to hear the truth, and Mr. Mainse I believe that you are the man to tell the truth! No finger shaking, just tell the people what the Bible says and the people can take it up with God if they wish to do so! People need to hear the prayers also. People need to hear that it is never too late to come to Jesus. Mickey rooney’s story speaks volumes to that subject! SHARE THE STORY WITH THE PEOPLE WHO NEED TO HEAR THE TRUTH! MR. MAINSE, YOUR THE PERSON TO TELL THE TRUTH! please give this your most serious consideration. God bless you. AMEN
