THE GRAVE

Today’s Reading: Ecclesiastes 7-9

Half way down the hillside of Mount Zion on the south side of the Old City of Jerusalem there is a Christian graveyard. Many Christian and Arab believers are buried there. The most popular grave to visit is likely that of Oskar Schindler, the industrialist who saved the lives of many Jews in Nazi Germany.

Key Verse: Ecclesiastes 9:10

Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going.

Solomon, the writer of Ecclesiastes, lived a long life. He had the opportunity to observe the power and majesty of God, as well as the futility and meaninglessness of life apart from God. It’s not hard to observe that Solomon, having received many blessings from God, was not always committed fully to Him. As a younger man, Solomon had worked diligently in building the Temple and in developing alliances with neighbouring countries. Peace and prosperity flourished. In his later years, he turned his attention to satisfying his personal desires for pleasure and wealth, and it began a trend in which Israel eventually turned away from God to embrace the religions of its neighbours. As an encouragement for us to serve God with all our heart, our mind and our strength, we could read Romans 13:11-14.

PRAYER FOR TODAY:

Father God, I pray for the grace to do as our key verse says and serve You with all my might. Help me to never, never, never give up on doing right and in doing it with a passionate love for You and my neighbours. In the Name of the One who did this 100% of the time, the Lord Jesus Christ, I pray, Amen!!!

100 PERSONAL WORDS:

In meditating on our key verse, I turned to Luke 9:62 and read the Words of Jesus, “No one, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the Kingdom of God.” I know my only fitness spiritually is because of my faith in Christ, but here and now by my human free will I have “put my hand to the plough” in a multi-year commitment to this daily blog. This two-year daily through-the-Bible commitment is now 18 months along the second time around. One can start at any time and twenty-four months later achieve the most worthy goal of reading, with time for meditation, all of God’s Word to His human family. Take your Bible in “HAND” and read and digest in your innermost being God’s Word. “DO IT WITH YOUR MIGHT.”

Yours for, as Jesus said, “Not looking back!”

David

  1. Thank You Pastor Maines for feeding us from the Bread of Life we all need wisdom as we are travellers passing through as we serve The Lord with gladness in all we do let us do everything heartily as unto Jesus Christ of Nazareth and praise Him for his life and death on the cross for taking all of our sins upon Him to take our place whether we live or die let God be praised through the life we lived
    MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE ♡♥♡★☆☆★☆★♡♥♥♡★☆

  3. Good Morning David
Thank you for keeping your “hands to the plough” and staying faithful to the daily Bible readings and study. I know your health battles over the couple of years have weakened you physically but your spiritual resolve to obey God’s call to ‘ “go and make disciples” through a disciplined life of daily studying the Word is such a great inspiration and example to so many.
May God continue to work in you and through you !

  4. Thank you, David. Waking to prayer with God, reading His Word and keeping on track with the blog is the best medicine. I find it difficult when I want to go for an early morning walk before the sunrise, and to praise God along the way because I can’t do both at the same time; hence, sometimes I am late posting a comment. I find being out in nature and thanking God for everything, just praising Him with every step, is such healing for my soul. Putting on the armor of God and praying for blessings for all saints.

  5. Oskar Schindler is a gravesite to be honoured. I still remember seeing Schindler’s List with my girlfriend, Tina; it is a moment I will never forget, when the entire audience was left speechless, not leaving our seats, once the movie ended. The pure unadulterated evil of Hitler, spawned by Satan, torturing the Jews, would not be fulfilled because God planted the seed of hope and love to save so many in Oskar Schindler.

  6. Just want to say thanks to you, Mr. Mainse, all your friends and family who contribute to the blog, and to all who pray. This 100words.ca is such a blessing. It has helped me to get up and spend time in God’s presence every day. As someone has said, consistency, thou art a rare jewel.
May God bless you all for this ministry.

  9. I so appreciate the time and effort you have put into this blog, Rev. David. I also am so blessed by the wonderful photos by your son Reynold and the help that Ron and Anne give you each day. 10. Amen as well! Duty has called me away from this blog a few days but glad I’m back and getting caught up not missing any posts. This daily bread is a lifeline to us spiritually and we are grateful David and to all who make it what it is. There is so much to learn and take to heart in Proverbs and now in Ecclesiastes. Blessings everyone.

  11. I just love these blogs and also the photos. I just wanted to mention that I seldom get the photos included with the blog anymore. I get what is said below the photo, but not the photo. I don’t know if it’s my computer that is the problem or not.

God Bless you David for these blogs and you Ron for your work in the work you do before sending them off to so many and to you Ann for your work in proof-reading!! I realize that it is a lot of work, but my day doesn’t seem complete without these blogs and photos!
