WISDOM IN THE SQUARE

Today’s Reading: Proverbs 1

Click scripture link to read online or HERE to listen online (then click the symbol of the audio speaker above the scripture portion).

An Egyptian obelisk from ancient Heliopolis, Egypt, stands in the centre of the Piazza in Rome. Three sides of the obelisk were carved during the reign of Sety I and the fourth side under Rameses II. The obelisk, known as the Obelisk Flaminio, or the Popolo Obelisk, is the second oldest and one of the tallest obelisks in Rome (some 24 metres high, or 36 metres including its base platform). The obelisk was brought to Rome in 10 BC by order of Caesar Augustus. The book of Proverbs predates the erection of this obelisk by 1,000 years.

Key Verses: Proverbs 1:10, 33

My son, if sinners entice you, do not consent…But whoever listens to me will dwell safely, and will be secure, without fear of evil.

PROVERBS — A guide book for Living! A proverb is a short sentence that conveys a moral truth. The motto and theme of this book is “THE FEAR OF THE LORD IS THE BEGINNING OF WISDOM!” Historical records credit King Solomon with composing 3,000 proverbs. Here we have about 800 of them.

The fool does not fear God and disobeys Him! The wise person has the greatest respect for God and obeys Him! The fool will listen to sinners! The wise person will listen to God! In our daily blogs we are paying close attention to what God is saying to us through His Word! In today’s reading Wisdom is portrayed as a person who appears as a woman. Wisdom calls out to three types of people: (1) The naive who can easily be swayed to sin, (2) The scorners who mock the righteous, and (3) Fools who hate the truth and anything that has to do with God. These people can be saved from destruction by turning to God. However, there is a point which one can pass where there is no hope of a turnaround!

PRAYER FOR TODAY:

Lord God, I ask for wisdom to be constantly with me and in me. Through the man known as the brother of our Lord, James, I am assured that if I ask for wisdom, You will give it liberally and without reproach (James 1:5-7). I’m praying for this gift in the Name of the One “Who became for us Wisdom from God” (1 Corinthians 1:30). Amen!!!

100 PERSONAL WORDS:

Norma-Jean and I did not know each other until she was 18 and I was 21, and we were raised in different Christian denominations, 300 miles apart. Nevertheless, we found that we had many things in common. We played tag, softball, attended a one-room public school, etc. We also had mothers who reminded us over and over of the serious negative consequences of being enticed by sinners to do the wrong thing. Both of our mothers died before we met. Mine of cancer when I was 12, and hers at the hand of a drunk driver when she was 17. We have vivid memories of our mothers quoting our first key verse from the old King James version, “If sinners entice thee, consent thou not.”

The wisdom of Proverbs was the DNA of our culture a lifetime ago. Timothy Eaton, founder of the Canadian Eaton’s stores, would give a copy of the Book of Proverbs to each and every employee. Eaton would say, “This is our employee’s handbook. We live by these words.” No wonder one of the great Toronto Churches is called Timothy Eaton Memorial Church. The congregation always maintains a Bible-believing evangelical Pastor in the pulpit (click here for information on this great church).

Yours for WISDOM!!!

David

P.S. Here are some of our friends standing on Mt. Carmel, Israel. A sculptor has depicted the Prophet Elijah who confronted false prophets here.

  1. When the blog was repeated for the second time, I recall it being mentioned that updates would be posted. This certainly is the time for 100words.ca to do so. I am very disappointed no mention of the attack on Paris has been made by 100words.ca. I am certain it will be covered on 100 Huntley Street, this morning; however, that doesn’t seem enough, considering the number of bloggers and dire circumstance. Thank you, Ger for mentioning prayer for Paris, France, yesterday.

We stand together, as a body of believers, and hold tightly to prayer, united, for our dear brothers and sisters in Paris, France, and all directly affected, around the world, by the recent attacks. For those in hospital, we pray for all your needs to be met and for God’s healing hand to be upon You. For those who have lost loved ones, we pray for your mourning. For those who are fearful, we pray for your strength. Father God, we lift up everyone who is grieving and troubled, to you. Comfort them as only you can. Let light come into this darkness and give them your peace. In the precious name of our Saviour, Lord Jesus. Amen, amen and amen.

The photos and articles written in the press show prayer vigils and church masses full, with people on bended knee; reminiscent of 911, fourteen years ago. When we are in our deepest throws of sorrow and despair, we call out to God, wailing for His mercy comfort and strength to ease our pain. He is the strongest tower, of which to lean on, in every circumstance; the rock to which we cling. We hold onto Your cloak, Jesus and won’t let go.

  2. The first gospel chorus I can ever remember hearing in a church was, “Where could I go, where could I go, seeking a refuge for my soul. Needing a friend to guide me to the end. Where could I go but to the Lord.” Also this motto verse of Proverbs, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom…”(Proverbs 1:7a). It was the verse that convinced me the Bible was true and was above worldly wisdom. Keeping the whole world in prayer at this time.

  3. Thankful for God’s promises. Freedom in His Presence. Protection from harmful events and diseases when we are close to Him. Lord, glorify Yourself in all the world. Help us to show the world who You are. I ask also for Wisdom. Amen.

  4. Thank you Pastor David again and again, as you present and give of yourself in this blog each morning; that we can come together with you in prayer lifting up our needs and concerns to Jesus Our Saviour and Lord.
For your guidance and expositions of the scriptures; sharing your life stories; giving us bloggers the opportunity to join in prayer with you and each other.
Blessings on you and Norma-Jean and each member of your family.

For some reason this blog did not come in through my “inbox” this morning; however I was able to get it through yesterday’s blog.

    • This blog didn’t come to me today, either. This seems to happen periodically. Yes, our prayers are truly with the people of France and all those who are in shock after hearing so many individuals were killed plus over 300 who are injured, 99 critical. It is another indication of the satanic forces behind this and other groups. Let us continue to pray that this evil will be put down as nations seek wisdom to determine what the world needs to do – including our own Government. And the care to ensure everyone coming into our country for help are not coming in disguise to do us hard. To be compassionate is what God requires of us – but wisdom also shouts at us in these drastic times – to be cautious.

  5. For the past few years I have made it a practice to read the “proverb of the day” each day. For example, on the 16th of each month I read Proverbs chapter 16. I find it so uplifting to start each day with a good portion of wisdom from the Word of God.

  6. Praying your prayer for today Pastor Mainse.

Also I pray for peace throughout the whole world in Jesus Name, Amen!
JOHN 3: 16 says it all. Praise God Almighty in Whom we trust, Amen!!

  7. Sometimes I go back and read the posts made on these readings first time around and often encounter replies that I have wrote. Two years ago at this time of year apparently I was very discouraged and worn out by a problem I was having, but for the life of me I can’t remember what it was.
The reason I mentioned this is sometimes in life we face difficulties that we believe at the time are so big only with the passage of time do we see how small they really were. Of course those going through real tragedies like those in France and elsewhere facing horrors unimaginable by most of us need our constant prayer and assistance.
But t was thinking in light of world events and my posts from two years ago perhaps the next time I feel so burdened by my circumstances I need to examine if whether the challenge is really that great or if I have just gotten spoiled by so many blessings that I have forgotten what true hardship is.

    • Mine didn’t either Christina. I found it by going into yesterday’s study and kept going on down the page. Then I signed up again for the study just like as if I hadn’t signed up for it in the first place:)

God be with you on this one and have a great blessed day.

    • My blog did not come this morning November 16 and I was wondering if some one could resend it to me please and thank you.
      Fondly

  8. My blog came in at 7:58 am, this morning. I read the 2013 post to follow the proper scripture reading. Continuing in prayer for Paris.

  9. My heart goes out to the suffering in France. It has made me very aware of Canada. We sometimes feel so safe, but I am very conscious of the fact that it can happen here. Please all of us pray for wisdom for our new government and for the Lord to keep His hand over our wonderful country. We need to be united in Christ, that is the body of Christ.
Please pray for me and my health, I have an ongoing problem that is not getting better. I live with my daughter and she needs prayer as she injured her knee and is on crutches. She has a very busy job so needs to heal quickly.
God bless you David , and your family and all the bloggers.

    • Lord God I ask that You would heal the knee of Elizabeth’s daughter and heal Elizabeth of a problem which she has had for sometime. Lord sometimes we need to have things happen to realize that You want us to look at YOU Lord and we thank YOU for Your unconditional love;
We also ask that You dear Lord will be with the people in France, give guidance/wisdom to the Christian people in France, send help where it is needed. Lord God we pray for peace to happen soon! We thank YOU in the Name of Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour AMEN

  10. praying for you Elizabeth for the Lord to cut off the root cause of your ongoing problem, and for total healing. I pray Lord Jesus for your healing touch on the knee of Elizabeth’s daughter, that the knee be restored to total health this day. Thank you Jesus for answered prayer, Amen!!!

  11. I have a difficult time listening to the Scriptures on Biblegateway.com. I have to find a different way, also, I am trying to get in touch with that website and ask them to come up with an easier way to access the Bible readings……when this blog first started the Bible Readings were great….then…..something happened….I want this situation cleared up….it takes time I guess…..
I would ask for people to pray for me please, trying to get through a day at a time with a mental illness, sleep disorder and this time change, THIS also takes time……
enjoy the blogs, and one day I’ll go back to the beginning and reread many things, it is odd how we can feel 2 years ago and how we feel today….GOD IS GOOD, HIS GRACE IS FOREVER AMAZING!
