An elderly man ponders Scripture while in the courtyard of the Western Wall next to the Temple Mount. He may be meditating on the words of Moses.

Key Verse: Deuteronomy 32:7

Remember the days of old,
Consider the years of many generations.
Ask your father, and he will show you;
Your elders, and they will tell you…

The song of Moses, poetry in the Hebrew language, is a spectacular way to present his last words. We have no idea of the tune he sang. It was no doubt in the minor key. It’s a sad sounding melody. According to available information, the scale for the major key arrived at some point as a more joyous sound in early Christianity. What a dramatic impact Moses made with his message. Ever since, it has been impossible for Jewish people to forget Moses.

Our key verse tells sons and daughters, as well as the following generations, to “ask your father.” How should a father answer? Deuteronomy 32:6 gives fathers, and mothers too, their instructions…”Set your hearts!” In Matthew 12:34b Jesus is quoted as saying, “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” Let us fill our minds with God’s Word and meditate on it. It will surely soak down into the very core of our beings, and the right words will flow out when we speak.

PRAYER FOR TODAY:

Lord Jesus, I pray that the Holy Spirit will continue to move the content of this two-year daily blog into my heart. May the thoughts expressed here faithfully communicate Your thoughts. Amen!

100 PERSONAL WORDS:

During the Christmas and New Year’s celebrations, I’ve had wonderful opportunities to follow Moses’ instructions. I’ve preached a bit to my children, my grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. I didn’t preach a long sermon. Often it was just a sentence or two. Like Moses, I even sang a verse or two of a song.

One of my heroes is my uncle, Rev. Manley Pritchard, 20 years older than his sister, my mother. My father was away during WW2 years, and my uncle filled in as a father sometimes. I can remember stern warnings, as well as good stories from him. He would be 136 years old if he was still here with us. His words still sound in my memories. He compiled a book which, in my opinion, should be back in print. It’s called, Pebbles From The Brink — “the brink” being the shore of the river of death (here is a link to an online version of the book…click the arrow to turn the pages). The last words of dying people are often startling. Of course, he had the last words of Jesus, which were, according to John who was there, “It is finished” (John 19:30). As a 12-year-old boy, I heard my dying mother’s last word. She laboured to say my name, “David.” I went to her side, kissed her and said through my sobs, “Mother, I’ll meet you in Heaven.” My dad reminded me several times that I added the words, “I will, I will.” I know I can have this assurance because Jesus “FINISHED” the work He came to earth to accomplish. His Cross is the bridge from this side of the river of death to the shores of Heaven.

Yours for wisdom to find the right words to say to our loved ones,

David

  1. Just as you told your mama,David that you would meet her in heaven- so I told my daddy that I would meet him in heaven if he would repent and receive the LORD JESUS into his heart. This he did as Pastor Sam Learning and Pastor George Mallory prayed with dear daddy and JESUS received him, forgave his sins and shortly afterwards, daddy passed into the presence of the LORD, having forsaken this old world. To be absent from the body, (for the believer) is to be present with the LORD, said the apostle PAUL.I shall see Daddy in heaven. Rev. Terry FELVUS

  2. Oh, David–so eloquently said, fine sir. Your words “His Cross is the bridge from this side of the river of death to the shores of Heaven,” are as majestic as the poetic of Moses. “Yours for wisdom to find the right words to say to our loved ones,” is what I search for now, with my mom. I have spoken with the Lord, for several hours, this morning, in prayer, daily readings, scripture, and the blog. Through the weight of various issues I struggle with and bring to God, He has clearly spoken through written word. Thank YOU, Lord, for the wisdom you have imparted and strength and reassurance it has provided! We are nothing without You and everything with You!

EVENING, January 3, Daily Light, Bagster/Lotz
What wilt thou that I shall do unto thee … Lord, that I may receive my sight.
Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.
Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures. — The Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, … shall teach you all things. — Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights.
The God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, … give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power.

  3. I love the advice to ask our fathers and elders about the past. Coming from a large family makes me curious about generations and happenings before me. Enjoy studying our bible and reading history books. Knowledge is power.
Thank u Rev. for sharing your stories. My mother died a day after my son was born. I was in northern Manitoba and she was in a little hospital in Winchester, ON. Doctors said she hung onto life ’til she heard we were allright. God blessed her all her life and she deserved rest in Jesus. She was born in 1904. She was my hero.
Moses deserved rest also so I don’t think he would have considered not going into the promised land a hardship.
May God guide us in all we say and do.

  4. Thank you for sharing your uncles book with us. How wonderful to be
Able to use this technology for His glory.
I am left feeling, that I haven’t got the capacity in me to truly love Him,
Really behold His beauty, majesty and splendour ,awesomeness and to Praise Him as He ought to be praised, He is so much more than my little mind can comprehend. To Him be all praise and glory.

  5. Rev. David thank you for making your uncle’s “Pebbles from the Brink” available for reading…it is most inspiring!
How special you were able to share Christ’s love with your children.

unfortunately, I don’t feel I did too well in that area…but I trust and believe the Lord is faithful to take even the little and make it big, that is my prayer.

    Great picture Reynold!

  6. Happy New Year David, Norma-Jean, your family and all the Huntley Street Family. Thank you David for your daily teaching. As always, over the past 30 years, you have been a great help to me in my Christian walk. The T.V. programme, ” 100 Huntley Street” has always been part of my life. I visited the programme several times when you were at 100 Huntley Street , but was unable to when you moved to Burlington. I thank and praise God for His great healing of your body and the strength he is giving you to write your blog each and every morning. Thank you, Jesus.

    Bless you, David,
    Dorothy

  7. David, thank you so much for sharing your Uncle’s book “Pebbles From The Brink”. I am blessed reading it! The eloquent praises are delightful & inspiring. The words of Billy Bray on Page 48 reflect a life lived in a close relationship with Christ and confidence in Him. His description of what he would do if he went to hell first are actually quite humorous. Thanks again.
