THE TEACHER

Today’s Reading: Genesis 5-6

Click scripture link to read online or HERE to listen online (then click the symbol of the audio speaker above the scripture portion).

The heavens are gloriously ablaze above the Eastern Gate of the Old City of Jerusalem. Some of those whose bodies are buried in front of the gate died hoping someday to walk through that gate following the general resurrection of the dead. Like Enoch, those who walk with God now can expect to walk with God throughout eternity.

Key Verse: Genesis 5:24

And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.

The way out of the “rat race” is simply to walk with God. Obviously, God wants your company. God wanted to walk with Adam and Eve every evening. Enoch’s time with God was so precious and consistent that, no doubt with his full consent, God took Enoch directly to Heaven without him experiencing death. Enoch’s name means “teacher” in English. He must have shared with others those things he learned in those long walks. Noah was Enoch’s great-grandson and was likely the recipient of Enoch’s sharing. Remember Noah? He is the one who found favour with God. The result was that he knew how to hear from God in building an ark to save his family. You’re on your daily walk with God now as you read His Word and talk with Him in prayer. Listen as God talks with you today.

PRAYER FOR TODAY:

Lord God, as I walk with You now, please fill me with Your Holy Spirit so that I may experience “walking in the Spirit” (Galatians 5:16). In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen!

100 PERSONAL WORDS:

Like Enoch, I have children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. I’m always telling them stories. I’m convinced that from his childood, Noah heard what Great-Grandpa learned on those long walks with God. It was probably the reason Noah turned out so well. I had a Sunday School teacher by the name of Miss Johnson when I was 10 & 11. She explained Enoch’s going to Heaven without dying like this: “One day as God and Enoch were walking together, God said, ‘Enoch, we’re much closer to My place than we are to yours, why don’t you just come on home with Me’?” For some reason I’ve never forgotten her story.

Let’s go for a walk,

David

  1. What a wise Sunday School teacher….
Keeping the truth so simple that even a child
can understand. Our grandchildren love to
hear all the stories of how God has answered
prayers in our lives. We have a great responsi-
    bility to the next generation.
Enjoy the blessings of community fellowship
together today. “Lord, I open my eyes to see
You lifted up today, and my ears are open to hear
Your still, small voice. Thank you for this blog
and the faithfulness of David and his family” Amen.

  2. Beautiful sky in today’s pic.
Adam lived 930 years and Methuselah 969 years. Wow! Dr. Oz. would like to talk to them! We all would. Someday.
Looked up Nephilim on Google and no one seems to know what it means;anything from space aliens to giants.
    Blessings on all fellow bloggers.

    • From the Index on Biblegateway:

Nephilim: There were giants on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.

Matthew’s Commentary (Resource on Biblegateway): 1. With their great bulk, as the sons of Anak, Num. 13:33. 2. With their great name, as the king of Assyria, Isa. 37:11. These made them the terror of the mighty in the land of the living; and, thus armed, they daringly insulted the rights of all their neighbours and trampled upon all that is just and sacred. Note, Those that have so much power over others as to be able to oppress them have seldom so much power over themselves as not to oppress; great might is a very great snare to many. This degenerate race slighted the honour their ancestors had obtained by virtue and religion, and made themselves a great name by that which was the perpetual ruin of their good name.

  3. I love to walk on this journey through the Bible with all of you.

Thank you Pastor David for taking us with you as you walk each day and give us fresh bread right from Heaven.

It is sad that God was displeased with the humans He had created and yet then comes His great mercy and grace to provide for us way back then.!!!

May we all worship a The One and Only LIving GOD……….Jesus

Off to service now. Enjoy this another day He has blessed us with.

  4. God can turn around any situation. As Enoch walked trusting Our Lord, so to we can place our hope in His authority and allay any fears. No need to force anything, but instead just let it be. Through prayer and our openness to Our Lord’s leading, if it is meant to be, it will be. His blessings and strength, to all!

  5. What a glorious display of clouds!! thank you Reynold.

As I thought about Enoch this song came to mind:
    “Trust and Obey”

“When we walk with the Lord in the light of His Word, What a glory He sheds on our way! While we do His good will, He abides with us still, and with all who will trust and obey.
The Chorus “Trust and obey, for there’s no other way to be happy with Jesus but to trust and obey.”
Verse 5: “Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at His feet, or we’ll walk by his side in the way; What He says we will do, where He sends we will go, Never fear, only trust and obey.”

  6. According to the chart in the NASB edited by Precepts, Enoch died 987 years after the creation of Adam and Noah was born 1056 years after the creation of Adam.
Therefore Enoch did not personally teach Noah as he had been dead about 69 years.

Noah could have been taught about Enoch by other family members but not personally by Enoch

  7. Here are the sermon notes (Bruce Marciano a few days back), David, reflecting on this very chapter. “But there were ten great people who lived from Adam to Noah. And God who leads people, calls people certain names. Do you know what your name means? And all I have to do to show you the original plan of God and it’s all through the Bible, its woven in the warp and woof of every page in the Book, through the Prophets and through the Apostles. And the meaning of those ten names is this: I can put it into a sentence for you. Man of earth, that’s Adam; nominated, appointed by God for great things, that’s Seth; became weak and sickly, Enoch; struggled and worked, Cainan; but the splendour of Eloihim, the glory of God, Mahalalel; descendent, Jared; broad teaching, Enoch; died a violent death, Methuselah; but conquered as a youth, Lamech; and now he brings rest and comfort, Noah. Let me go back over them again; man of earth, nominated, appointed, became weak and sickly, struggled and worked; but the glory of God, descendant, broadest teaching, died a violent death, conquered as a youth, but now, brings rest and comfort. And as it was in the days of Noah, the Apostle writes, so shall it be in the days of the coming of the Son of Man. Yes, He’s bringing rest and comfort for those who call upon His name. He’s bringing hope, he’s bringing health. He’s bringing deliverance from all the works of the destroyer, the devil. He’s doing all of that but at the same time as they are eating and drinking and marrying and giving in marriage, as it was in the days of Sodam. The sins of Sodam; the sins of the world that break the heart of God. And as we get closer to that moment of His return, the darkness is darker but the light is shining more brightly. And the light is shining right now to you. The light is shining right now to those of you who are watching on television. On yesterday’s telecast, Gordon Williams gave the Gospel and you’ve just heard it once again. But it’s not enough just to hear it and make it something you agree to up here, you’ve got to open your heart down here and say Jesus, come into my life, into my heart, come into my heart. His mercy endureth forever.

    AMEN!!!

  8. How awesome is our God! I had a Bible teacher whose name was Miss Snowball. She came with a horse and black buggy to the one room school house decades ago every Friday at 3 until 5 and the whole 30 kdis had Bible study and prayer and stories from the Bibile. THE WHOLE SCHOOL STAYED! That was part of our education. God bless the one room schoolhouse! She came summer and winter and even during the summerl holidays. If the weather was bad I would ask her to come and stay with me and my family only about a mile away and she would and I LOVED HER VISITS BECAUSE dad didn’t drink, we prayed, laughed, sang Christian songs. I adored this woman. God put her in my life for a very good reason. I didn’t know the term but found out years later that I WAS THE PRODUCT OF THE DYSFUNCTIONAL FAMILY. One afternoon in 1952 Miss Snowball asked if anyone wished to accept Jesus Christ as their Saviour. My hand shot up and we went down into the coal bin where we both knelt down and I asked Jesus into my heart! I didn’t really understand it all! My parents and grandparents went to church,, I was baptized but this was something I wanted to do for me, for Miss Snowball and for the Lord!

    • Oops! computer glitch. Further to my comments above…that Bible Study teacher, Miss Snowball, made an impression on me because I remember it like it happened yesterday. I mourn over the fact that no Word of God is taught anywhere except in Churches and Christian Schools. No room for God in all levels of government, public schools, businesses, on public holidays like Canada July 1st…etc etc HOWEVER God is only a sigh, a blink, a prayer away. He has not departed from us, PRAISE HIS NAME ETERNALLY! He surrounds us with His love, a person only needs to say “Lord God, please come into my heart today, I confess I am a sinner and I need you Dear Lord God to please forgive me of all my sins. Give me a new spirit and help me to walk with You always. Help me to learn of Jesus and bring a new attitude inside me. Help me to be patient, kind, forgiving, compassionate, understanding, non-judgemental, give me the gift of humour, of discernement, of humility and Lord never remove your arms that You have around me. Hold me securely and allow me to lean on You. Thank you dear Heavenly Father. AMEN!”

      • another computer glitch! I thank God for that Bible study teacher and for my Pastor during my “Catechism Studies” That was excellent for me! This was called “Saturday school” and went 2-3 years. Best years of my life and definitely deisgned by God for me to attend because I surely tested my parents and the Lord also. PRAISE HIS NAME FOR FORGIVENESS! Please pray for me. I have an opportunity to “guard someone’s dignity and to save someone’s pride” however please pray the Lord will send me an increase in my income IMMEDIATELY. I have about 24 hours or so to do so. PRAY WITHOUT CEASING!

  9. Thank you Beverly and Sah , You have told my story, We too went to school
during the hot summer days, studying bible stories. we loved it. I remeber
my mom teaching me a little song… and I would sing day in and day out.
Come into my heart , come into my heart Lord Jesus ,come into today
come in to stay….come in to my heart Lord Jesus…… and I was very small
    when I learned this song…..R…

  10. Enjoyed all the posts and stories about Sunday School teachers, Miss Johnson and Miss Snowball as I taught Sunday School myself and Daily Vacation Bible School and loved it.

  11. So much I would like to ask. Who were the sons of God who took the daughters of men for wives. Were the giants these same sons of God.

  12. How could I forget Vacaton Bibile School! I went at an early age. About 8 stayed with grandparents who lived 2 blocks from the church. Then one day, when I was grown up (teenager??????) I taught VBS to pre schoolers! It was an exciting time for me! It’s funny how these things have stayed with me. Wonderful memories. However as I grew up I rebelled against everything! I had the start of a chemical imbalance! It ripped through my life. I was finally diagnosed at 47 years of age. I am bi polar! However through all this mess, God never left me, I think I have grown up a bit, I am a senior, still learning and in awe of our Triune God! Thank you Lord Jesus.AMEN
