A MIGHTY ANGEL

Suggested Reading: Revelation 10

Click scripture link to read online or HERE to listen online (then click the symbol of the audio speaker above the scripture portion).

Looking from Israel across the Dead Sea to the Kingdom of Jordan, you can see the salt-laden shoreline and the spotted sink holes. Imagine John's vision of a gigantic angel. One of the angel's feet is on the land and the other on the sea.

Key Verse: Revelation 10:6b-7

…there should be delay no longer, but in the days of the sounding of the seventh angel, when he is about to sound, the mystery of God would be finished, as He declared to His servants the prophets.

Jim and Kathy Cantelon write today’s 100 Words segment (originally published in Crossroads’ Day Unto Day devotional series)…

The key verse is a quote from a “mighty angel” who comes “down from heaven” (verse 1). He is of immense size, his body “robed in a cloud,” with “a rainbow above his head,” his face shining “like the sun,” and his legs “like fiery pillars.” He places one foot on the sea and the other on the land, raises his hands to heaven, and shouts with a lion’s roar (verses 2-3).

To this point in Revelation, John has written as though he were in Heaven. Now, however, he is on earth (visions have a way of changing from one scene to another), and he is able to converse with this remarkable angel. Another aspect of the scene, which in the natural world would be incongruous, is perfectly in order in an apocalyptic vision – John, the human being (with human physical dimensions) not only converses with this immense angel, but is also able to take a scroll from the angel’s hand and “eat” it.

The scroll tastes “sweet,” but turns John’s stomach “sour” (verse 10). Its content has something to do with prophecy – for John is told, after eating it, that he “must prophesy again about many peoples, nations, languages and kings” (verse 11).

Perhaps the key ingredient in the scroll has to do with “the mystery of God [being] accomplished” after the seventh trumpet is blown (verse 7). That mystery is very much related to “our Lord and…His Christ” who “will reign for ever and ever” (11:15).

PRAYER FOR TODAY:

Lord Jesus, You are the King of kings, and the Lord of lords. You reign supreme. I look around me and see confusion, violence, and evil men destroying people’s lives. I pray for insight to see that while human free will seems to be in charge temporarily, in reality You are working in spite of me and all other men and women, as well as through me and all who are people of good will, to ultimately bring about Your will here on earth. In Your loving and all powerful Name I ask You for grace. Amen!!!

100 PERSONAL WORDS:

Some Bible prophesies I think I can understand, particularly the 500 or so that have already been fulfilled. The remaining 500+ still in the future are a far greater challenge. There is so much symbolism, understandable because people such as Daniel, Ezekiel, and John were human just like me. Not that I’m comparing myself to them, but it’s comforting to know that they were also imperfect pilgrims on their way, as John Bunyan wrote, to the “Celestial City.” The Apostle Paul, originally known as Rabbi Saul of Tarsus, a brilliant intellectual, wrote, “For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then [in the future] face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known!” That’s from the Bible’s love chapter, 1 Corinthians 13:12. The infinite value of reading God’s Word daily, even when we “know in part,” is absolutely essential to me as a believer in Jesus. God does reveal Himself through reading the Bible. For example, I was browsing Youtube and rediscovered a testimony from the 100 Huntley Street telecast. Stan Telchin, a Jew, was shattered by a phone call from his daughter in university, telling him that she had come to believe that Jesus Christ was the Jewish Messiah. He set out to prove her wrong by studying the Bible. You can guess at the outcome. Click here for the interview from a few years back, hosted by Reynold and Kathy Mainse. I’ve learned to keep on keeping on reading God’s Word, even if I do not have total insight into the mysteries which will only be fully understood when the actual events have occurred.

Yours for never, never, never giving up on reading our Bibles!!!,

David

  4. I have a special prayer request today. This is about a news I saw on television yesterday of a Sudan woman that is being sentenced for marrying a Christian man after being raised from a Muslim background.
She may not know any of us and we may not know her either, but in Christ, we are all family and it’s been in my spirit to make this request on this blog since I heard the news yesterday. May the good Lord make a way for her where their seem to be no way and where there is a way make it wider! May she be vindicated, so that all may see and know that she made the right choice! In Jesus name…Amen! Stay blessed everyone

  5. Love the pic of the Dead Sea. Wonder if they have the technology to extract fresh water from the salt water. Can’t imagine God would let all that liquid go to waste.
How exciting to welcome a Jew into God’s world of salvation. Thank you DM for all the great links you supply to us.
So delighted a new 2-year study of our Bible is coming soon.
I have two young granddaughters, 8 & 9 years of age. Would any of you be able to recommend some good Christian books for this age group?
Enjoy this beautiful weekend fellow saints. May God guide our footsteps in all that we do and say.

  6. Yes, they have a way of converting salt water to fresh (been able for some time). I would not even think of not again starting over, the reading through the Bible. I learn something new every time I read each day. I do tell folk about the blog. Love to all today. Going to see, “Heaven is for Real”.

    • I heard a lot about this story (some negative); however, I went to the movie and it was quite a good family oriented movie and does depict the struggle of faith in tough times – and God always has unique ways of communicating faith; in this case, “a child shall lead them”. Love I Peter 1:3-5..especially, ‘God..hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance…RESERVED in heaven for you”. God
has made ‘the reservation’ for us in heaven – all we have to do is “show up” and claimed that ‘reserved’ spot allocated tous. “Heaven is for real” according to the Scriptures. Blessings.

  7. What a great privilege to join everyone again in June as we once again go through The Word. As Doreen says, there is always something fresh and new.

Looking forward to that fresh bread Pastor David.

I can’t imagine how John felt when he saw the size of that angel but even after the instructions given I admired his obedience in eating he scroll. I am sure some of us would say “no” if told it would turn our stomach sour. What a glorious gift and opportunity he was given. Praise The Lord, and enjoy today fellow bloggers.

  8. Great to see your enthusiasm about doing this blog another two years, and I will certainly share the news! It has definitely been an inspiration and learning experience, but more importantly, relationship building with our Lord. Thanks to everyone involved! Enjoy the day!

    • I am so appreciative of your dedication, apparent love for your fellow man/woman and child, love of God and your daily choice to continue steadfast in being a servant to our God. However, you are a friend as well of God and Jesus, your intimacy and remembrance of His blessings spring out of all your writings. Thank you is so small in comparison to what you are doing. Your son’s pictures bring me insight to a land I have never seen, and an understanding of placement and context for Scripture.. I always think to myself.. Imagine, people of Scripture walked and looked at this land.. The Lord Jesus walked here!! Etc.. So many words and expressions of thanks have gone your way, this is my attempt to convey mine.. Many prayers to you and your families.. Xo

  9. Great News…I am on board for doing another two years. Thank you David Mainse for your faithfulness. Everyone have a safe long weekend. God Bless!

  10. Thank DM. I will be reading through the Bible with you again. I will also be contacting individuals on my contact list and let them know of this Bible Reading Plan. Thank you for your commitment to this process – your leadership, encouragement, testimonials, challenges and encouragement. Blessings. Eph.1:3

  11. Dear Rev David M,

Once more today, I am left with so much gratitude in my heart from the reading of Revelation through the interview of Reynolds and Kathy. So much to be thankful for to our Lord, our Saviour, our Messiah, Jesus.

Looking forward to the next two years for I could not picture one day without your fresh bread! And I’ll diligently without ceasing, pray and listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit in showing me what He desires from me as an obedient servant of Christ. So Jesus, Thank You for Your Grace and let me be able to be as obedient as John was when he literally ate the scroll; tasted like honey but became bitter in his stomach but did obey what was asked of him. All this in Jesus’ name, Amen.

P.S.: Dear Patricia, I will be putting the young student into prayer with my church sisters and brothers.

Have a blessed long weekend everyone!

    xxxCarole

  12. Saw “Heaven is for Real” this afternoon. I is amazing and a tear jurker. Passing from this world to Heaven is our REWARD. Loved it.
