CHIEF CORNERSTONE

Suggested Reading: Psalms 117-118

Bedowins set up their transient homes (commonly tents) in locations best suited for their livestock. Here they are located just below Mount Nebo, the mountain in the Kingdom of Jordan from which Moses viewed the Promised Land.

Key Verses: Psalm 117:1-2

Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles!

Laud Him, all you peoples!

For His merciful kindness is great toward us,

And the truth of the Lord endures forever.

Praise the Lord!

Our key verses constitute the shortest Psalm, with only sixteen words in the Hebrew language. It comes in the middle point of the Bible. Of course, we have been moving back and forth between the New Testament and the Old Testament. For those who started 100words.ca with Matthew, we’ve been reading together for 17 months now. We have seven months to go to complete reading through the Bible. Don’t give up now!

Psalm 118 encourages us to join the composer with total confidence in God alone. As we look for the Bible to interpret the Bible we may want to read about the “Chief Cornerstone” (118:22) elsewhere. Click on 1 Peter 2:4-8 and Ephesians 2:19-22. Jesus, Messiah (Hebrew), Christos (Greek), is that “Chief Cornerstone” in the construction of God’s eternal building! Jesus was rejected by the majority of Roman-appointed political and religious leaders in Judaism, but not by thousands of living stones amongst the Jewish people. As that tiny Psalm says, “Oh, praise the Lord. ALL YOU GENTILES!” We non-Jews are also living stones in God’s spiritual house.

PRAYER FOR TODAY:

O Lord God, I praise You, laud You, and give thanks to You. I pray that “I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord” (118:17). “You are my God, and I will praise You! You are my God and I will exalt You” (118:28). I do this through the Person and work of “the Chief Cornerstone,” the Lord Jesus Christ! Amen!!!

100 PERSONAL WORDS:

At the wedding of our second daughter, Ellen, to Nizar Shaheen in the village of Cana of Galilee, the women from the village raised their voices in very loud high-pitched tongue shrill sounds. It’s called “ululation” (click here for a sample). If it wasn’t so early in the morning, and if my visiting son David Reynold and his wife Kathy weren’t sleeping in the next room, I’d give it a try right now. I understand that this sound is what the word translated “laud” from the Hebrew, implies in our worship of God. Pictured above is an Arab Bedouin tent home. I can guarantee that the people who live at the foot of Mount Nebo know how to “laud,” or ululate. The women at the wedding were lauding God for marriage, for vegetables, meat and other blessings!

Also I have had the honour of visiting many First Nations communities over the years. Again and again I’ve heard Chiefs, like my dear friend, the late Grand Chief Billy Diamond of the Quebec Crees, testify to the glory of the One they love to worship, whom they refer to as their “Chief Cornerstone,” Jesus, their Saviour and Lord! I’m feeling rather emotional just now as I think of Billy (click here for a news article about Billy). Tomorrow, God willing, I’ll tell just one of my stories about this man who truly was a great Chief!

Yours because “His mercy endures forever!”

David

  1. I am sure I may speak for many readers and bloggers who have been with 100words.ca since Matthew, we are growing exponentially day-by-day in scripture and the insight you provide us, David!! “Our Lord is faithful and His mercy endures forever!” Blessings this day, to all!

      • Was just praying the other day that Scott was okay as he had not posted for some time. Miss you too Scott and your always encouraging words.

      • Amen to both your postings David, miss you Scott.
Again thank you David Mainse for your precious leading over these months. As a shepherd leading a flock, you have led us as manna from heaven. Praying for you and your family and all precious brothers and sisters in Christ. Have a great day!

    • His mercy endures forever, indeed! I, too, miss hearing your comments each morning, Scott. Wherefore art thou, oh fellow saint?

  2. Dear Saints,

Recently, I have had major computer problems and have been unable to make regular posts. I give thanks to God for having amended the situation.

I, too, give thanks to have been part of this blog from the beginning; early on, too shy to comment, even amidst my excitement to be part of David Mainse’ daily bible study, from start to finish. It is a new experience to post our thoughts and feelings on a blog that is open for anyone to read. I have read the bible through twice before this; but nothing compares to the guidance understanding and direction from David, his family assisting with the blog, and 100 Huntley Street in the backdrop. How blessed we are, how truly blessed! My heartfelt thanks to you, David, et al! And to all fellow saints, those who post, those who read along; all who pray for world peace love and God’s Will to be done–thank you for being such a wonderful blog family. We share the same desire amidst God’s glorious mercy on us! Our God is an awesome God! Amen!

I was struck by verses 5-9 in Psalm 118:

    I called on the Lord in distress;
The Lord answered me and set me in a broad place.
    The Lord is on my side;
    I will not fear.
What can man do to me?
    The Lord is for me among those who help me;
Therefore I shall see my desire on those who hate me.
It is better to trust in the Lord
Than to put confidence in man.
It is better to trust in the Lord
Than to put confidence in princes.

This psalm reminds us to fear nothing from man for God is our sole trust. How uplifting is His truth! Praise God, praise God! Wishing you, David Mainse, and all fellow saints, a most blessed day; amidst the rain, and snow, and winds that blow. We are blessed by the Lord’s love, let us give thanks and praise Him, so!

    • Amen Beverlee, those are the very verses that struck me too and I can attest to the fact that as I have read this in the past, making them my own, and seeing God’s mighty hand at work in my life and my family.

  3. I am one of those who read this blog everyday but have only left brief comments a couple of times. This walk with The Lord and Pastor David has been inspiring to say the least. I am once again involved in a wonderful loving God driven church. I am so thankful for the messages I read each day. Our Lord is awesome and you fellow saints are a blessing to me.

  4. JESUS IS THE CORNERSTONE
    CAME FROM HEAVEN TO ATONE
    THOUGH REJECTED BY HIS OWN
    JESUS IS THE CORNERSTONE
We praise God for Jesus being our cornerstone
Ee put all our faith in Jesus as our own personal Saviour
God bless all the saintsand servants of the Lord
God Bless your day and heal your bodies and meet your every need snd grant you floods of favor and His peace in Jesus name Amen ?;)

  5. Jesus is my Chief Cornerstone too and plan to follow this blog from start to finish. I am so privileged to be a part of this and what an great opportunity to share God’s Word and fellowhip with this wonderful family. I understand that the center verses in the Bible are Psalm 118:8-9. Real meaningful prayer this morning, David. The Lord gave my family a wonderful gathering this past Sunday in celebration of my eldest brother’s 80th birthday. “This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.”(Psalm 118:24). Have a great day everyone!

  6. Good morning fellow saints and bloggers– today my mother is celebrating her 90th birthday. She will no doubt get many material gifts and well wishes, but I am asking you to give her the gift of prayer. You see my mother does not believe in God at all. She thinks when we die we are worm food, as she describes it. No amount of words I can say, will convince her otherwise. However, if everyone reading this will pray to our Lord to find His way of revealing Himself and the truth to her– if that prayer is answered with a yes, I can think of no better present that can be given to her– than having the scales removed from her eyes, so she can know God and be with Him forever. She is 90, but it is never too late for anyone, trusting in faith God will hear and answer our birthday prayer for her. Thank you

    • Father God, we come in the name of our Saviour Jesus Christ and ask that you send your Spirit to speak to Donna’s 90 year old mother and that you might remove any hindrance that would keep her from believing in You. Thank you for the years you have given her and I pray along with others for her salvation.

  7. Thank you so much David Mainse for your wonderfully uplifting daily blog. Your insights and stories are so encouraging and heart-warming.. The pictures accompanying every blog are truly amazing. Thank you very much. God bless you and your whole family and 100 Huntley St. PS to Donna…I am joining you in prayer for your mother to have her eyes opened so she can receive the gift of salvation.

  8. Thank you I am finally having a daily time reading the word of God and for the first time I believe i can read the bible through in two years . Today I read your Link On Billy Diamond I have always had a soft spot for the Canadian Indians. Our family story told to my great grand mother to my father. As one of the first settlers in the bay of Quintey If it was not for the Canadian Indians help our first settler father would have Froze to death and and if a squaw was not sent to help with the birth of the first child all of us in proceeding generations may not be alive. The story has instilled in me The Christian church family should always be there for each other

  9. Being a part of this daily blog has been and is one of he greatest Blessings I have been given, and being able to share with other saints in The Lord, without judgement, is assuring and uplifting.

Thank you Pastor David for your insights and faithfulness in sending it out each day, for your family too in their part. I pray for you, Norma-Jean, Ron and Anne as you journey to The Holy Land, for safety in travel and good health.

P.S. May I ask my fellow bloggers for prayer. I requested several weeks ago for an unspoken request regarding our family, which did not come to fruition, but tomorrow is a BIG decision day and I pray The Lord will be glorified in the outcome, only HE deserves the glory and honour. Thank you.

  10. A few weeks ago I posted that I missed not hearing from my sons who live far away from me. Thank you to those of you who prayed to that…on Sunday I heard from all three of them! How Great is Our God!!

I too join in prayer Donna, for your 90 year old Mother…that by God’s Grace and Love her hard heart would melt to receive Jesus into her heart!

  11. Dear Rev David M
Went back to peek at our first daily 100 words blog on June 4, 2012, What a gift you have given us all these past year and a half. Trust me that I have no intention of letting go of such a gift of getting Gods precious word presented with such simplicity and clarity. Thank you for your faithfulness in this labour of love to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We are truly blessed.
PS to Donna I too am joining in prayer for your 90 year old mom asking God to open the eyes of her heart that she might see Him and accept Him as Lord and Savior of her life. Amen
Ps to Catherine: May God grant your family the blessings He has in store for them. Whatever the outcome. God is good all the time and all the time God is good. We praise and honor you Lord in granting these petitions. In Jesus Name amen.
    xxxx
    Carole

  12. Hi David,
I really enjoyed your new book. I treasure your book as gold. I love your blog too. I keep this last, so I can take enough time to read it. After reading your blog I purchased few books you recommend too. I would love to see you in person at 100 Huntley Street location, when you come back from your trip to Holy Land. I would love to go to Holy Land with you in the future. I was there early February of this year. May God bless you and your ministry. We love you.
