“PUT” and “LET”

Suggested Reading: Colossians 3-4

Click scripture link to read online or HERE to listen online (then click the symbol of the audio speaker above the scripture portion).

The Garden Tomb in Jerusalem is believed by some to be the burial place of Jesus (but only for three days!). HALLELUJAH!!! Join me here this November on our two-week tour of Israel. At some point in history the door was enlarged and in so-doing they must have broken out the wall between the entrance and the window. Notice the groove where a large circular stone could have been rolled back and forth. The rolling stone from this tomb is missing, but on our tour we point out another tomb in the north that has a stone which would fit in this groove.

Key Verses: Colossians 3:14-15

But above all these things PUT on love, which is the bond of perfection [completion]. And LET the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.

In today’s reading the word “PUT” is repeated four times, and the word “LET” three times. This daily blog is highlighting over two years those words or concepts that are repeated for extra emphasis. If we had heard Paul speak in person, he may have raised his voice or made dramatic body language gestures to reinforce his main points. In writing, repetition serves the same purpose. Paul is intent on getting our full attention!

(1)”PUT” to death fornication, etc. (2) “PUT” off … filthy language, etc. (3) “PUT” on the new man. (4) “PUT” on love…. (1) “LET” the peace of God rule in your hearts. (2) “LET” the Word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom… (3) “LET” your speech always be seasoned with grace.

The action word is “PUT.” The passive word is “LET.” The first, we deliberately make happen; the second, we relax and yield to the Spirit of Christ living in us. Compare Scripture with Scripture. For example, read James 4:7-8 for action, and read a statement about letting “the power that works in us” go to work. It’s not an effort. “LET” it happen as in Ephesians 3:20 (read Eph 3:14-20).

PRAYER FOR TODAY:

Lord God, I pray for grace to do all I should do to live as Your follower, and grace to rest in the knowledge that Your power is working in me. I know with absolute certainty that You are “ABLE TO DO EXCEEDINGLY ABUNDANTLY ABOVE ALL THAT WE ASK OR THINK.” Thank You that Your power is working in me now and always!!! In and through the Person of Jesus I pray, AMEN!!!

100 PERSONAL WORDS:

The book of Colossians is all about Jesus! In yesterday’s blog I made a mistake, not about the theme of the song I posted, but about the particular song that Dr. Ben Carson, the world’s most famous neurosurgeon, would sing when under stress. I should have attached the song, “Jesus is all the world to me” (click here). The song I posted, “He is my everything,” also points to Jesus. Now I have Ben’s song today. Dr. Carson has been a guest on the 100 Huntley Street telecast (click here for the interview).

As part of today’s reading in Colossians 4:2-4, Paul asked for his readers to pray for him. I’m asking you to pray for me in the same way, “That God would open a door for the Word” (i.e. keep the blog going and give His favour to share it with others).

In reading Colossians several times over three days, I’ve thought often of a story from New York City. Norma-Jean and I visited the Teen Challenge Centre in Brooklyn, which is located in a very rough area. As we were leaving, Rev. Don Wilkerson (brother of David Wilkerson, Teen Challenge founder) said to us, “Jesus will take you safely to the subway station.” About a minute later, a Puerto Rican teenager approached us. He said, “Hi, I’m Jesus, just follow me to the subway.” We laughed with joy at the prospect of safely following Jesus. I had often heard baseball commentators talk about a great play made by “Jesus” (in Spanish pronounced like “Heysoos”). That day in New York, we actually met a modern “Jesus.”

Yours for following Jesus, knowing when to “PUT,” and when to “LET,”

David

P.S. Seeing Colossians is “All about Jesus,” here’s another clip from the Matthew movie with actor Bruce Marchiano playing the part of Jesus (click here).

Inside The Garden Tomb, visitors can look through the barrier into the burial chamber. In our Israel tours Norma-Jean usually stands in the foreground shown in the picture, pointing out features of the tomb to the members of our family of travellers as they enter and marvel at the truth of the death, burial and resurrection of our Lord. Please join us if possible this November.

  1. Time and time again, the words of the Bible come to life and speak to us of the living Messiah, Jesus Christ! History speaks volumes and ancient Israel is reflected in the readings of our blog everyday through word and picture. How wonderful it would be to visit this Holy place with you in November, David … but other responsibilities hold me here. If anyone has the opportunity to go on this trip however, please go … I’d imagine it’s the trip of a lifetime!

  2. Oh, David Mainse, God has used you to open the door to the ‘Word’ to everyone through this blog–whether it be those who respond daily, weekly, monthly, or occasionally–we are all reading the Word everyday, at first dawn, in the moments of the stillness we find with God. We shout in praise to God–thanks to you!

With the guidance and structure of your blog, to read a chapter or more of the Bible every morning, and let the Spirit sink into us through His Word, we shall continue, spread, and become a wide open door for many to come, in future years–God willing! And let that be the center stone and rock of your blog–that it is through God’s will, that it be done to glory Him!

We continue to pray for you, David, for your peace, comfort, and love for God to flow through you. Know that we, the saints of Jesus, love you, so!

    • AMEN Beverlee!!!! Well said!!!!

This blog and daily scripture reading has been a God send for me personally. Thank you Pastor David for your love for the Word and your love for souls!!!! May God richly bless you today and always.

      • Amen, Beverlee!! I too pray for your health Pastor David, and the continuance of this blog which has been an incredible journey and inspiration!! Many thanks to you and all who contribute to its production!!

    • Amen Beverlee!
David M. it would be wonderful to be able to join you on the trip to the Holy Land this Fall, but health prevents such a journey.
I am sure there are others who also are unable to go for various reasons. Hence this blog is a blessing, along with the photo’s Reynold shares…..these allow us to ‘see’ and to be ‘arm-chair’ travelers in walking where Jesus walked, as you both share with us each day. Thank you to all who help make this blog happen.
Your blog also opens new ‘nuggets’ that can be easily missed in our own personal readings. Thank you for sharing of your time and wisdom each day. I don’t comment often, but I am following in the background. 🙂
You are a blessing David M. and are so loved by your readers, and covered daily, with prayer. As Ruby wrote: “thank you, for your love for the Word, and your love for souls!”

  3. I do pray for you, David – for God’s Perfect Will for you. We know what our desires are – to have this blog forever!

  4. Amen Beverlee!!! And thank you David, Ron and Reynold
for all you do to make this 100 Word Blog delivered to
    us faithfully every morning.
When visiting Israel and standing inside the empty tomb,
the note written on the door really grabbed my emotions…
“HE IS NOT HERE, HE IS RISEN”
Remember the hymn we use to sing….
    I serve a risen Saviour,
    He’s in the world today,
I know that He is living
    Whatever man may say.
I see His hand of Mercy,
I hear His voice of cheer,
    And everytime I need Him
    He’s always near……
    Chorus:
He lives, He lives, Christ Jesus lives today,
He walks with me and talks with me
    Along life’s narrow way,
He lives, He lives, salvation to impart.
You ask me how I know He lives?
    He lives within my heart.

Amen!!! Praise to our risen Saviour!!!
    Faith

  5. We indeed serve A RISEN SAVIOUR and we are grateful and privileged to join you Pastor David every day to see what new nugget of wisdom you give us.
I continue to pray God’s strength for you and know that this blog means so very much to each of us who read it and to see from the Word how precious we are to our Saviour, and to be able to pray for each other gives us added encouragement to continue on this journey with you. We love you David Mainse.
Have a wonderful day knowing Our Lord goes with each of us.
Love the story about “Jesus” taking ou to the subway!!!

  6. Vivienne and I were honoured to be with you and Norma-Jean in the Holy Land last year. We both consider the trip a fabulous way to get closer to Jesus. The Bible readings that you and Ron led at each holy site were incredible.
Now the Bible has come alive for us when it is read at Church and at home.
Thank you, Norma-Jean, Ron and Ann for wonderful memories.
    Shalom,
    Graham.

Thanks to the wonderful pictures of Reynold and Ron,Ann,and Norma-Jean all of us who cannot attend physically Israel will definitely follow your journey in November from afar.
P.S.: Could one of you tell me how to add the french translation of our n.i.v. daily blog? I would like to do French and English for I am praying with great expectation to do bible study in my own home, God willing, this fall with the program sent to me by Billy Graham ministries called ”My Hope”.

    Have a blessed day everyone,

  9. My precious fellow bloggers, lets not elevate names on the blog as it discourages others from giving their comments too. Everyone can respond as David has invited whosoever will to comment. Obviously this has not happened intentionally, so let’s all be sensitive to the one who is afraid to be heard, lest they feel their comment is not good enough.

  10. Amen Catherine I pray for David to
I just got back from listening couple who is traveling across Canada by bicycle called “Enough is Enough” making a difference for Mental Health braking the stigma
Kerry and Ginney are good speakers, but it was sad to hear their stories of their children.

  11. The emphasis on the word “let” suggests peace and reminds me of the serenity prayer. However, these also remind me of wolves who pretend to be sheep that speak peace only to corrupt, offend and deceive. Still, I recognise in myself a need for more real peace. It must also come with work, if “putting” on the new man and armour of God is not just “letting” it be there, but putting it on. I express anger with language that would be considered unchristian. I am not sure that being silent is usually better but maybe sometimes it is. Then, I will let the blind follow the blind. It does not seem good for them or others they will lead to not speak but I would seem patient.

  12. To follow up on what I just wrote, if I speak without bad language in those moments where people passive aggresively actually try to offend, it would require the effort of patience and putting on the armour of the virtues of God spoken in the New Testament.

  13. Good teaching today and will remember that the book of Colossians is all about Jesus. The song, “Jesus is all the World To Me,” expresses my heart as well. Am late today as I was at the Campmeeting Bible Study. Am also thankful David, Ron and Reynold for this daily blog which has brought me closer to Jesus and for all the encouragement from fellow bloggers, thank you. All because of Jesus and His love and sacrifice for us.

  14. Hi,
Wonderful photos by Reynold. Thanks to you David for great
words and prayers of inspiration and encouragment.
God Bless and undertake for your health.

  15. Another excellent blog and I particularly liked your description of “put” and “let.” I was thrilled to see you and Norma Jean briefly this afternoon in your car. The picture I took of both of you in the car turned out really well. Thanks for giving me several of your blog business cards. I’ll be happy to pass them on to friends. Many blessing to both of you. You are loved! (Glad that you’re still enjoying the clothes hangers after all those years. My mom who has been with Jesus for 19 years, made dozens and dozens of them).

  16. We have travelled with the Mainse Holy Land Tour and continue to be blessed by great memories … and these blog messages. BLESSINGS

  17. The book of Colossians is such an inspiration as Paul prays so fervently for the church in Colossae that he has never met. It inspires me to pray for my brothers and sisters globally, those who I have never met but seek the Lord through your blog, through their own faith journey. Thank you as well (and Reynold) for the pictures that bring these times to visual life for me. I will be joining you in Israel this year and can not wait to see where Jesus walked which, until now, has only been in my imaginations. God bless you David (and team) for your faithfulness and fervency to share your wisdom, knowledge and wealth of experience with us daily.
