Key Verse: Judges 5:3

Hear, O kings! Give ear, O princes!
I, even I, will sing to the Lord;
I will sing praise to the Lord God of Israel.

Yesterday we read of a hit from a hammer on a tent peg, today it’s a hit song that I’m sure became #1 with the Children of Israel. Another generation learned through this song. They learned that those who love the Lord will be “Like the sun when it comes out in full strength.” The result was 40 more years of faithfulness to the God of Abraham, Isaac, Moses, Joshua and Deborah. We have great advantages in knowing God in our time. Back then they had the scrolls of the first books of the Bible, but very few of these children of ex-slaves could read. The synagogue movement where the Scriptures are taught by the Rabbi was still 1000 years from its start. The people would gather for a message from their spiritual and temporal leader only once a year. No wonder they wandered far from God. The influences from the Canaanite culture were strong, and unless each family had daily prayer and the recitation of God’s stories, they were easily overcome by the evil around them.

What is our excuse when the prevailing culture overcomes any godly influence we may have on our children and grandchildren? Just think of the helps to godliness we have which the second and third generations of Israelites did not have. When we consider our struggles today, perhaps we should not judge those people too harshly.

PRAYER FOR TODAY:

[As you pray today, think of the ways your life is enriched through your local Body of Believers. We are a blessed people.]

Lord God, I have a great local congregation here in Canada, and when I go the senior’s park in Florida, I have great churches. I have weekly prayer meetings and Bible studies. I read my Bible every day and watch 100 Huntley Street on TV daily. Help me to be consistent in my personal prayer life, oh lord. Compared to the Israelites in Deborah’s day, I have absolutely no excuse for ever drifting away from You. Thank You Jesus! Amen!

100 PERSONAL WORDS:

Compared to the early Israelites, I have so much to be thankful for when I consider the spiritual input I had as a child. We prayed on our knees three times a day as a family, plus “Now I lay me down to sleep” at bed time. My Dad, Rev. Dr. Roy Lake Mainse, served as a missionary, a pastor, and a college president. During his years as an educator, he approved of my Sunday schedule – 10 a.m. Sunday School at our own church, 2 p.m. at the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, and then 3 p.m. at the Salvation Army Church almost across the street. For some reason, I loved every minute. O.K., there were other reasons. I was not allowed to play ball with my friends on Sunday afternoon, and I also got to play in the Salvation Army band. If I can find a picture of my Dad, I’ll attach it below. Just look at him. He was “Authority” in my eyes. I’m ever so thankful. My mother passed away when I was 12, and my Dad and I grew so very close. He’d be 116 if he were still alive. In case they read this in Heaven, I love you Dad and Mom, and I’ll see you soon!

Yours because of all the blessings we’ve received from generations past, including the generation of Judge Deborah,

David

My Father and Mother, Rev. Dr. Roy and Hazel Mainse.

  1. Secular philosopher George Santayana once said “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” I’ve heard this saying throughout my life and felt it was worth repeating here. Time and time again we see the children of Israel forsake God and then return to Him when the going gets tough. What is our own tendency to go it alone, to neglect church attendance, to let the Bible collect dust, to wander in prayer?

  2. You were certainly fortunate to have parents with strong Christian and moral stature, to guide you through your early years of life. There was no conflict over attending church on Sunday as a family, and engaging yourselves in social and prayerful activities. Because your parents did not suffer from depression or mania as a result of substances, their behaviour was consistant and predictable. You felt safe, and you felt valued and loved. Much can be gleaned by simply looking at the picture of your Dad and Mom to see their eyes and surety of expression. You were truly blessed, as you have in turn, blessed others.

  3. .Thank you so much for giving me a glimpse of the spiritual input that the people of Israel had in those days. In response to that I can only say: “Thank you Lord for all the spiritual blessings given to me”
Thank you for the daily blog, may the Lord be with you and the family of bloggers.

  4. Thank you for sharing your photos with us David. Your parents looked like lovely, strong, religious people. I too would like to know how to be that type of influence in my family. I have attended church of course (not on a regular basis). Perhaps I should start there? I pray each night for you and your family. I also pray for things I need. A job for starters. Maybe you could help in that department? Thank you once again David for sharing your photos and valuable information for each and every one of us. I pray you are doing well. Vicky

  5. Two of our bloggers today – Heike & Vicky have asked how they can influence their families and those around them. First of all, you have to have asked Christ to be your personal Lord and Saviour. It’s as easy as ABC
    A – Admit that you are a sinner – Romans 3:23
B – Beilieve that Christ loved us so much that He died for us – Romans 5:8
C – Confess your sins and ask God for forgiveness – Romans 10: 9-11
Your life will be different and people around you will see and know that something or Someone has changed you and you will be able to share with them. Have you ever heard the saying, “I’d rather see a sermon than hear one any day” and “Actions speak louder than words”. Our lives can daily influence those around us if Christ is the center of our lives – the way we speak, how we react, etc. The list goes on and on. If you have not accepted Christ, why not do it today!!!!
I love this blog and so enjoy reading all the comments from fellow bloggers. It is very encouraging every day and I love the Bible reading, pictures from Reynold, and words from David. They are a blessing each and every day. Thank you to all!!! God bless everyone!!

  6. Hi David, Thank you for sharing those lovely photos of your precious mum and dad. They look like they would be able to keep the naughtiest little boy in order! Ha! Ha! Yes Ruby, it’s amazing how you can attend church and never hear how to be saved. l attended church 3 times every Sunday growing up but somehow missed the part that Jesus saves us from our sins by invitation. l was 33years old by the time some wonderful lady explained it to me. When l called out to Jesus and asked him into my life there was such an incredible change, everyone noticed it, l fell in love with Jesus!

  7. Praise God for those in our lives who have influenced our walk withJesus. We are truly blessed to be able to read The Word and pray daily.
I thank God for the heritage I have but in the end it comes down to our own personal acceptance of asking Jesus to be Our Saviour. Thank you fellow bloggers for your encouragement and thank you David for leading us each day and sharing so much of your personal life with us.

The picture of your Mum and Dad shows they love Jesus. It is in the eyes!

  8. Thank you David, you had me laughing out loud, in your opening lines re: the song being on the hit parade etc. :0) Again, thank you for this walk through the bible…it means so much … I never miss Huntley street either…for decades…

  10. Dear David,
Thank you for the inspiring story and photo of your lovely mother and handsome father! Their dedication is a good reminder to all of us to remain consistent in honouring and seeking God.
I really appreciate your Daily Blog. It is an excellent learning tool and so nice that you keep in touch with us this way! I can’t tell you how encouraging your posting on January 28th was to me. I was feeling very discouraged that day. When I read your blog, it lifted that cloud of confusion and hopelessness that I was feeling. Thank you SO much!
I continue to pray for you and your family as well as the Crossroads staff. Thank you for all you are doing for our world. : )
    God Bless You.

  11. Thanks for sharing Ruby, that was so special and you are right on. I so much love reading all the comments on David’s daily blog. I look forward to reading it every morning before going to work. I find myself meditating and the word as I go through my day. Thank you David for doing this, this blog is a blessing for me and many others. David, I love the photo of your Mother and Dad. My Grandmother Myrtle is a sister of Roy Mainse. She once told me that she prayed for her Grandchildren by name regularly. I remember well when your Father was the pastor of the little white church on Division Street in Kingston in the mid 1950’s. My Great Uncle Roy Mainse, a Godly man. May God continue to bless you cousin David, and give you strength. I’m so thankful for my rich Christian heritage.

  12. thank you David for bringing a new perspective on the Israelites and their continual falling away from following the Lord. I have caught myself at times shaking my head and asking, how could they, after all they had seen and experienced from the Lord in their lives, but then I stop and think…how could I with all I have seen Him do in my own life, for there have been times when I too have found myself straying into paths I should not be on!
Thanks for sharing the photo of your parents. You were most blessed to have been raised in such a home.

  13. David, I had quite a long blog describing my own spiritual background and appreciating yours. That’s a lovely picture of your godly parents. Then when I was about to click on post comment, my internet disappeared and I lost the whole thing. I wonder if anyone else had that problem. Also. I still do not get e-mails yet. God bless you all today.

    • Ger, that happens sometimes to me, as well; maybe the internet server gets disconnected; could be weather related.

  14. Love the photo of your parents, David! Thank you for sharing it. They will be rejoicing when they reunite with you in heaven!

We have so much to be thankful for as Canadians, in 2013. There are so many avenues available for us to be fed the Word–prayer, worship, church, bible study groups, blogs, videos, emails, UCB Canada, 100 Huntley Street, CTS, Crossroads 360–how very blessed we are! The Lord is all around us, and within us. We need only soak up His Word and Spirit and let it penetrate through us and be transformed!

  15. I feel truly blessed by, this walk the God’s Word, thank you fellow bloggers for each of your replies and David bringing us together, sharing God’s Treasure Chest of Truth.Psalm 28:8 says The Lord is the strength of His people; He is a stronghold of salvation for His anointed. To God be the glory due Him!!!!

  16. Dear David So sweet of you to share with us this touching picture of your mother and dad.
Greatly blessed you have truly been and so many of us are receiving the fruits of your teaching because of the spiritual guidance of your parents.
God bless you and all my fellow bloggers

  17. You are indeed blessed to have had such an advantage in your early years of godly parents. I didn’t grow up in a christian home but am thankful for parents who loved us and weren’t afraid to discipline. My mother recognized my desire as a child to attend a gospel preaching church and there I first learned about Jesus and His gift of salvation. Although I didn’t accept Him until I was married and had 3 children, I was aware of my need and God sent a friend into my life who invited me to a gospel meeting. That was 45 years ago and I’ve been praising God for his love and grace ever since.!!

  18. I only wish I could have met your mom. Roy Lake Mainse certainly made an impression on me, even though it was in his later years. I enjoy waking up and reading your blog daily. Your journey through this latest trial has helped me many times. Keep healthy….
