Suggested Reading: Luke 9

Tabgha is situated on the north-western shore of the Sea of Galilee in Israel. It is the traditional site of the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes. This altar is built over the rock where it is said that Jesus took the two fish and five loaves of bread and blessed them.

Key Verse: Luke 9:23

Then He said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me…”

The decision to follow Jesus was made by His followers initially. Peter, Andrew, James and John left their nets. Levi (Matthew) left his tax collecting post. The others left whatever it was they were doing. Now Jesus teaches that this decision must be made DAILY! As God, Jesus made the decision, with His Father, to become man. As Man, He learned DAILY to live in obedience. “Though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered” (Heb. 5:8). We may choose to meditate on Isaiah chapter 50. Isaiah 53 is known better as a description of Jesus’ cross, but this teaching is found throughout the Prophets. Isaiah 50:4 says, “He awakens me morning by morning to hear as the learned.” In verse 7 of Isaiah 50, the experience of the Messiah is described this way, “I have set my face as a flint.” This blog is designed to help us all every day in making a fresh decision to follow Jesus.

PRAYER FOR TODAY:

Lord God, I confess that most mornings I would like to stay in bed for another hour, but I know that I cannot follow You closely without doing as Jesus did, taking up His cross daily. I praise You for the grace You give me to follow You. Please continue to give me the gift of discipline every day. In Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen!

100 PERSONAL WORDS:

I have a confession to make. This morning, following my Bible reading and before my prayer time, I was sitting on the couch, my head laid back, meditating on what I had read. There is a big clock on the wall in front of me, and to my chagrin, a half hour had gone by of which I had no memory. The truth is that I fell asleep. I thought of the disciples in the Garden of Gethsemane, but that was no excuse. God had faithfully awakened me at 4 a.m. He had done His part to prepare me to do this blog, but my part was not so faithful. Nevertheless, at times like this I take comfort in that often-repeated Bible verse, “His mercy endures forever.” That’s found 26 times in Psalm 136. God is consistent. I need to learn by making a deliberate decision every single day to follow Jesus more consistently. How are you, my blog partner, doing in this department?

Yours for “daily” following Jesus,

David

  1. David, I’m dedicated to be consistent in awaking first thing every morning to read God’s word, meditate on what it says, to read your blog at 100words.ca and then post a comment as best as I can. With a compass point firmly directed towards the teaching of our Lord, this is the best way to build instruction into my life and to start my day.

  2. Good Morning David
I have fallen asleep many a time when I was in prayer maybe it was the comfy chair
I was sitting in your not the only one. I need to say the prayer you wrote and confess
it to God. I hope you and Norma have a good day today . I am just about to get my ride to church
    God bless you.

Oh, How I would love to confess that I have reached a disciplined life early in the am.

For those that are stragglers like me- self disappointment can lead to giving up. But never . . . Afraid I lack at times in the self discipline department. After many struggles, transplants and skin cancer ( no excuse) but cannot afford to allow lack my lack to detour. I Iendeavour to once again pick up my boot straps and find God rewards His word and the recalling of years of study and teaching even when one has been “less than”. Just an encouragement for those who feel they have not achieved well meaning goals – remember the smallest seed, deed or effort He
will bless. … “a cup of cold water”.

  8. Dear David, I think the Lord understands our frailty, after all, being 70 and over , we do have an excuse for being tired. He knows our frame and remembers we are dust,eh? Couldnt you go back to bed then later? I do! Love Anne

  9. Hello David–I want to thank you for this daily devotional it has finally got me in the word daily…it might not be as early as you but I try to get it done in the morning and I sometimes I fall behind but have been able to catch up. I also do the Daily bread devotional. Thank you once again for your dedication and I pray God continues to Bless both you & Norma-Jean.

  10. What an incredible example of faithfulness you model to your blog readers! I also love the fact that your humanity shows through and is an encouragement to the rest of us fellow pilgrims as we travel through the humps and bumps of life. You inspire me to spend more of my day on the things that are of eternal value i.e. more time in the Word. The closer you get to someone, the better you can hear his voice! God bless you always.

  11. David I too have a hard time with mornings and I have had this problem all of my life. I am not what is called a morning person. Lately especially I find it harder to get up early too. I thought that I was the only one who had this problem. I pray everyday that I will make all of my days count for Jesus.
