THE HEART

Suggested Reading: Matthew 23

Here you see the Western slope of the Mount of Olives covered by thousands of Jewish graves facing toward the Temple Mount and the Eastern Gate of the old city of Jerusalem. The valley between is the Kidron Valley. This slope of the Mount of Olives has been used as a Jewish cemetery for over 3,000 years and holds approximately 150,000 graves.

Key Verse: Matthew 23:26

“Blind Pharisee, first cleanse the inside of the cup and dish, that the outside of them may be clean also.”

Learn to see as God sees by learning to think as God thinks by making the Word of God a daily part of your thinking process. This is the eternal value of what we’re doing together in this blog. 3000 years ago the prophet wrote, “For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but God looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7). It’s true, we do look on the outward. Therefore, it’s important to groom our appearance so we will not hinder the shining forth of the inner beauty of Christ. Cleanse the inside in two ways: The washing of God’s Word (Eph 5:26) and by confessing our sins, “The blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin” (1 John 1:7).

PRAYER FOR TODAY: Dear Lord, thank You for washing me inside with Your Word which I’ve just read, and thank You for washing away my sin by Your precious blood. I believe Your promises. You cannot lie. Therefore, it’s done. Amen!

100 PERSONAL WORDS:

A few blog entries ago, I mentioned a woman named May, who asked me to conduct her husband, Win’s, funeral, even though I was not a minister at the time. May had been born and raised in Northern Ontario. As a young man, Win was a railroad engineer who, on every trip, noticed a young girl beside the tracks waving at him. Eventually they met at the water tank (steam engine), and later Win and May married. May’s usual stance was hands on her hips and normally a cigarette was dangling from the corner of her mouth. She was probably 65 when I met her. It would’ve been easy to see May only from her outward appearance; but there was a deeper May. Win had built a second cottage beside the one they lived in, which May allowed me, a 20-year-old single man seeking to be in full time ministry, to live in. One day I asked her why she would not allow any ordained minister or priest to conduct Win’s funeral. She said, “I knew what you were doing out in that boat with Win besides fishing. He told me you prayed with him and he became a believer in Jesus and was not afraid to die anymore.” I had the great honour of leading May to Christ also. The inner beauty of Jesus was evident as she lived to serve others. Sorry, I’m well over 100 words!

Love,

David

  1. Jesus, help us to set our gaze only upon you and not upon the deceptive ‘things’ of this world. Help us to become free from the sin which can so easily entangle. Help us by giving us nourishment through your daily bread, the word of life. Help us by giving us the strength and moral fortitude to resist when temptation strikes. Help us not to become as the hypocrite. Help us to seek out and to reveal to us the sins of our heart, so that we may bring them to you for forgiveness. Help us to become more and more like you as we continue along in this journey. Bless us today Lord with your Holy Spirit, to guide us in the direction of truth. Jesus, this is my prayer. Amen.

  2. Dear brother David;
    Thank you for what your doing and writing.It is a blessing to read every day.I love the pictures you put and also your comment.
    You are a great man of God and I have a lot of respect for you.You always obey what the Lord has asked of you.
    Continue your wonderful writing about the Word and God’s say.
    Hope the health is improving.

  3. Christ certainly minces no words in Matthew 23 about being authentic in our worship and lives, unlike the Scribes and Pharisees. Who wants to dine from a dirty dish. Similarly, the story about May and her husband Win speaks to me of people in their “ordinary” realm, transparent and real. Their lives tell a story of love and commitment. And so it was that David’s appeal to lead Win’s funeral was based on his transparent love for God and not pomp and pageantry.

    Spectacular photo (amazing light) reminding me of how “fleeting is our life”.

  6. Even the smallest ripple we don’t see reaches the other side or bumps into something/someone on the way. It is often the small deeds we never remember that do the most good or harm. I pray Jesus is helping me “skip” my little pebbles.

  7. Beautiful message, David. 100 words plus is fine by me!
    It is so easy to judge by appearances – I almost, on reading your blog today, slipped in to thinking, my goodness what a rough lady, May must have looked. But having known many people thru’ my lifetime, I have met many who, on first glance, I could easily have never communicated with, but I did, and my life was enriched by their gentle hearts. Learning and growing, day by day, and living by God’s word is an ongoing commitment. One I am exceedingly glad to have been led to and learned from – and still am. God’s blessings and healing to you, David.

  9. Good morning David;
    I’d like to thank you for all of your wonderful blogs and ‘words of wisdom’ that I just ‘know’ that you pray so hard for each and everyday, even now at this trying time of your life. I’d like for you to know that I, too, just one of GODs many children am praying for you for all of the wonderful work you’ve done for so many people over the yrs. I, too, like so many others, wake up and look forward to your next days blog with great anticipation, as well as the wonderful photos taken by your son.
    This story has a special place in my heart as both my father, his brother, and his dad we’re all conductors for CN and I have many special memories, even though they’re all retired now. I find too that you are so like MATTHEW in the scriptures, always caring for everyone else when others ‘MighT’ expect you to do the thgs. you do for the gd. of yourself, which is the ‘FurthesT’ thg. from the truth.
    Anyways, I’ve been watching your show since a yr. ago this past March when I lost my wife to EPILEPSY and haven’t missed nary an episode, and I can say that between your wonderful people and my Epilepsy Assn. as I, too, am an epileptic have helped me so much, and I would like to wish all the best to you and your family and congragulate yous all on your past 50 yrs. GOD BLESS
    Mike and STACEY(past wife)

  10. I’m just learning at long last how to operate a computer. You have helped me be determined to give it a shot! Thanks for your very insightful blog,l love it! You always make us think and coming from the side of being very casual and maybe sometimes a bit too layedback.You are giving me a reason to perhaps dress up a bit more.l think we should possibly take the middle road and not always look so perfect that it intimidates people but as you say at least try to look half decent for Jesus so to speak. Kind of, when in Rome do as the Romans do,always having love at the centre of your being. If people like the way you present yourself l suppose they are more likely to listen to what you have to say. Look out world heere l come!!!! Ha! Ha!

  11. David
    I love your blog today its wonderful and like everyone else on here I do look forward to seeing what you hav to say no matter how long I’m a detailed person so I know.
    There are so many out in the world who I wish could look inside a person and get to
    know them first before judging. I have epilepsy and you don’t notice anything unless I have a seizure. Where I live I have to have someone walk with me everywhere and a lot don’t want to go because their afraid. Though I do have a some who do and have helped me in other ways which I appreciate.
    God Bless you

I hope to make a bit of a diary of the blogs as a way of sharing some of our family historys with the younger generations so they can be open to finding the mysteries and joys of discovery that the bible storys and examples are still being lived out in our present times and at the end of the day we can remember actual examples, we may have not recognizied at the actual time they happened but holy spirit will mark some part you helped be a part of it. Thank-you Reynold for the many excellent pictures, they really help David stay with 100 words to keep us centered in the preparing a gift of inheritence as ” your grandaughter sang in tell the old storys grandpapa ” with the joy pleasant re-call of freinds who travelled in the new season of pouring into new kin skins the lesson of living to-day well is the faith well of sharing even one refreshing cup in the evening and morning lets a day begin and end with thanks giving praises . thanks David for 50 years of walking and talking us thru each day amen .
