TWO SONS

Suggested Reading: Matthew 21

On the East side of the Mount of Olives is Bethphage, where Jesus mounted the unbroken donkey colt and started His triumphal entry down the Mount of Olives and into Jerusalem. This beautiful ceiling painting is in the church known as the Palm Sunday Church. On display in the church is a large square rock that is believed to be the mounting block Jesus used to mount the donkey.

Key Verse: Matthew 21:29-30

“He answered and said, ‘I will not,’ but afterward he regretted it and went. Then he came to the second and said likewise. And he answered and said, ‘I go, sir,’ but he did not go.”

Chapter 21 begins with the fulfillment of Prophecy (Zechariah 9:9). The people had all studied the Hebrew Scriptures, and after witnessing this Palm Sunday event (the triumphal entry into Jerusalem on a donkey), they were open to Jesus’ teaching, the temple cleansing, cursing the fig tree, His authority, and the parable of the two sons. Jesus’ message is very clear. He judges the promise breaker much more seriously than He does the one who was initially rebellious but ultimately obedient. Two sons are in this story. Like them, you and I have made and broken a promise. We still have a choice. We can continue ignoring a promise we may have made to God or we can repent of the sin of rebellion and dishonesty, and turn and serve God. For we who turn from our own way to God’s way, there is forgivness, never rebuke.

PRAYER FOR TODAY:

Lord, which kind of Son (or daughter) am I? Father, if I have failed to keep my word to You in the past, please bring it to mind, that I may confess, repent, and be made right before You. Thank You. Amen!

100 PERSONAL WORDS:

Please join me every day for fresh Bread. The Word of God is living Bread. I am weak if I fail to read and meditate on God’s Word daily. I need daily spiritual nourishment. Then I am strong. 35 years ago as of June 15th we began the daily “100 Huntley Street” telecast from that address in Toronto. For months prior to that beginning, I could not escape the message of Psalm 19:2, 3 and 4. It was constantly in my mind. Please turn to those verses and read them. This is obviously what God had in mind for television. So after 15 years of a weekly TV show called “Crossroads” and several years of the weekly children’s show called “Circle Square,” we launched into daily television. Of course I considered not doing this. The cost was huge, but I obeyed and God responded through the generous support of His people.

Love and prayers for the grace of obedience,

David

  1. This morning I’m reminded of that old hymn ‘Trust and Obey’, I’m sure we all remember it. The hymn may be old, but the words are so meaningful, even today. Here’s one verse …

But we never can prove the delights of His love
    Until all on the altar we lay;
For the favor He shows, for the joy He bestows,
Are for them who will trust and obey.
    Refrain:
    Trust and obey, for there

  2. continued … “Trust and obey, for there is no other way, to be happy in Jesus … but to trust and obey”. I read that the author of this hymn was inspired by Psalm 84:11-12 which reads: “11 For the Lord God is a sun and shield: the Lord will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly. 12 O Lord of hosts, blessed is the man that trusteth in thee.” The Lord requires obedience from His children, this may sound tough and not sugar-coated, but it is the truth. I pray that we will listen closely to the promptings of the Holy Spirit speaking to our hearts, that we become more obedient servants for our Lord. Amen.

  3. It’s so important to read God’s word everyday. His “daily spiritual nourishment” strengthens and fills me with Love, Joy and Peace.

I enjoy this journey with you and love your blog 🙂

  5. Thanks David for your 100 Words daily. I say to you, be healthy, alive, strong and whole now in Jesus’ name. (Deut.34:7)

  6. It has been said that at any given time, one is doing the best they can in that very moment. This is not to say one can not do better in that moment, but it did not happen. Today’s word implores me to shift my responses towards a greater awareness of Christ and trusting the outcome in my life.

  7. Trust & Obey…todays means a lot to me

Thank you to those who like David obeyed….im a life saved & Changed because you gave to 100 Huntley st…17 extra years …The Lord has given me ..as i continue to walk with Him this side of Heaven…heading Home..

I Gave my Life to Him….instead….Of Taking my Life…i come with a Grateful Heart…

  8. Interesting that Jesus would use a “stepping block” to mount a donkey (per picture caption) when it’s perported he was at least six feet tall. 🙂
