Key Verse: Joshua 13:1
Now Joshua was old, advanced in years. And the Lord said to him: “You are old, advanced in years, and there remains very much land yet to be possessed…”
We know from our reading that Joshua’s spy partner, Caleb, was now 85. Joshua may have been older, perhaps 90. While in their 40’s, they had brought back a good report to Moses about Israel’s ability to move right away into the Promised Land. The great majority of the people did not believe them, and so they languished in the wilderness for almost 40 years more. But now, here they are setting boundaries for the land possessed by each tribe. It’s been said by farmers for centuries, “A good fence makes good neighbours.”
Caleb, at 85, speaks a classic line to his leader, Joshua: “Give me this mountain” (14:12). He is still not afraid to move forward in confidence. He still has a positive outlook on life, its challenges and opportunities. How could this be at his age? The answer is in these words (14:14b): “He wholly followed the Lord God of Israel.” The ancestors of Goliath were on that mountain. Taking over this land was no easy task. As Winston Churchill, already an old man when he took on Hitler, said, “Never, never, never give up!”
PRAYER FOR TODAY:
Lord God, when I read the story of Caleb or think of Britain’s WW2 leader, Churchill, I feel empowered to go forward. I need You, Lord. Dear Jesus, You won the greatest victory by far through Your Cross. You finished the work You were called to do. I purpose in my heart to never give up. I expect You to be with me as You promised. In Your Name, Jesus, I pray, Amen! (click here for Matthew 28:16-20).
100 PERSONAL WORDS:
Joshua agreed to Caleb’s vision for the future. I believe that my Joshua (“Yeshua” in Hebrew and “Jesus” in Greek) has responded to my desire to stay busy for Him. This is why, since my official retirement, I’ve produced and hosted two TV series, which continue to be released on air on YES TV across Canada. The first was Really Good Medicine and the second, A Living Witness to Amazing GRACE. I have no intention of giving in to self pity or a defeatist attitude. With Jesus living within, how could it be otherwise? And then my wife, Norma-Jean, absolutely refuses to tolerate any negative talk when I remind her that I’m 80. I just searched for encouragement in 100huntley.com and came up with my son, Ron, and his “Encouragement for Seniors” video (click here).
Yours for moving forward boldly in this life and then on into eternity with confidence in Christ!
David
Ron, thankyou for your heart felt words to seniors it came at a time when I needed it; we had a very big snowfall yesterday and I was not able to go and do my driveway (although I have a snow blower) and always try very hard to use the two hands the Lord has given me. I have a problem with my left arm (edema) and shoulder and had just came from my phisio and did’t want to undo the work they have done to let me have some relief. I live in a neibourhood where (unless there is money involved) so your words encouraged me.
Please pray that someone’s heart will touch my circumstances that I find my self in right now.
Carole
My prayer group prayed this pm for you Carole.
Thank You, Father, for Your help everyday. Bless Carole and all those who need Your help. And help every person to realize their need for You. Lord, help all Your people share the Good News of the Savior. Help us all be so filled with Your Spirit that our lives, like David’s, will overflow, all for Your Glory, Lord, in Jesus’s name, amen
Amen
Praying for you Carole. He is faithful (I am alone as well). I do live in an area that has many helps available. Let’s pray that the Lord will put it on someone’s mind to help you with snow & groceries, etc. I have a 91 yr old friend who has an amazing couple in her area who help with both needs of snow removal & groceries. Maybe your doctor’s office or friends in your area would know of helps available in your area. Many churches (in Burlington, Ontario, have helpful volunteers as well. (I don’t know your location). If you do a search for senior’s help in your area, that might help. Definitely I will pray & claim His promise – He will never leave us. Emmanuel (God with us).
Praying for you Carole, that the Lord will send someone to help you out. Sometimes, life seems overwhelming, but keep the faith. Also praying that your shoulder improves quickly. Blessings to all blog partners.
Amen to your prayer HJR.
Amen to your prayer HJR.
Amen
Heavenly Father, our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, and to the sanctity of the Holy Spirit, we bring Carole, Doreen, and all us women who manage living on our own with physical ailments, before You. You know Lord, what we need help with to get everything done. You know our circumstances and hearts, God. We pray when a fellow saint cries out for help, that You hear us and provide for us. As we abide in the safety of the shelter of Your wings, Lord, we give You all the thanks and praise. We trust and know You will aid us and that it will be for Your glory. We are so blessed because You live and breathe in us. We need never fear because You are with us and will never leave us nor forsake us. In Jesus’ precious Name, we pray. Amen.
My apologies, that includes you HJR! I see you were asking for prayer, recently. Lord, You know all HJR’s needs. We pray You strengthen and lift her with amazing grace, and provide her with all she needs. In Jesus’ mighty Name. Amen.
Yes, I agree with all these prayers that the Lord will provide for Carole in this need to help with snow removal like You have provided for me Lord. A wonderful Christian man came with his small plow(just what i need as we do not have much snow this winter unlike the last) and did a good job last weekend. Like you Carole I do what I can and sorry you have a disability right now. I was just out for two and a half hours cleaning off the car, pumping up slack tires, cleaning out eaves troughs, raking roofs and giving God the glory. Thank you fellow bloggers for prayers for me in this area. Lord speak to someone to help Carole, in Jesus Name, Amen. Love this passage of scripture about Caleb and David’s prayers.
Angels are watching over you, sister Ger.
Amen …. agreeing with all the prayers and requests.
I love today’s title……Young at Heart…. ….that is my prayer and goal to always stay that way!
God has taught me a lot, I found myself alone at the age of 60, this was eight years ago. I was so sad and angry and lost, but little by little our Heavenly Father has taught me how to trust him for everything, money, companionship, health and many other things!
Ger…. I am so impressed by all that you do and as you say…giving God the glory!
That is key for me as well, I have a plaque that says…Gratitude Changes Everything…
My heart goes out to all who are on their own like a lot of you ladies on this blog. I am joining in prayer for everyone of you, and asking that the Lord who hears our prayers will sent help where it is needed.
Blessings to all Eleanor M
