Key Verse: Leviticus 25:17
Therefore you shall not oppress one another, but you shall fear your God; for I am the Lord your God.
Here is a truly revolutionary economic system. This dealt with the poor on a long-term basis. The land belonged to God; man was a temporary caretaker. If a person fell on hard times, he might have to sell his possessions, but the sale was only temporary. First, his land would be returned to him, or in the event of his death, to his children in the 50th year of Jubilee. Second, the man or a relative could, at any time, buy back, or redeem, the lost holdings. This is a beautiful picture of our older Brother Redeemer, Jesus Christ. With His suffering and death He has redeemed us, restoring all that was lost through sin. To care for the stranger, immigrant, and those in need among us is still a priority for the one who owns everything. Most of us have been blessed financially by God. Let us reach out to someone today, making every year a “Jubilee.”
PRAYER FOR TODAY:
Lord God, please show me someone I can bless today and every day. I know that You are my Source of blessing. When I am the one in need, I can trust You to meet that need. You promised through the pen of Your servant Paul that You “shall supply all my need according to Your riches in glory by Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19). In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen!
100 PERSONAL WORDS:
When our children, Elaine, Ellen, Reynold and Ron, were around 11, 10, 9, and 8, a precious family blessed us with the gift of a pony, and we kept our pony on their farm at no cost to us. What a joy to load everyone into the car on a Saturday, drive out to the country, and enjoy each other’s company, along with the pony. We named her “Jubilee,” and we would sing the song as we travelled, “Jubilee, Jubilee, we’re going to that happy Jubilee” (check out the lyrics and video of the song here and sing along with us). This gave Norma-Jean and me the opportunity to teach our children about the Jubilee in the Bible and about God’s care for the poor and needy. We arranged to have our little Jubilee visit another pony on a neighbouring farm, and the children named the new little arrival to our family “Sparky” (see photo below).
Yours for our education in God’s economy, based not on hoarding, but on giving,
David
P.S. 2012 was Crossroads’ “Jubilee Year.” God has done wonderful things throughout 52-plus years of TV/media ministry! (www.crossroads.ca). Also the picture below brings back a flood of happy memories.
This is a truly cool chapter, I’m no farmer but I couldn’t help but notice what sounds something like some form of crop rotation (so farmers don’t over farm the land). All the economic laws God provides seem intended to make sure all the people can prosper and not just a few.
I seem to remember back in high school when we studied The Merchant of Venice that our teacher told us that Christians were also once forbidden from loaning money to one another at interest, that’s why in the story they had to borrow from Shylock.
Leviticus seems much cooler than I thought.
Good morning and Blessings to everyone, it may be dull and raining where you are, but if we have Jesus in our hearts the light will shine through. I really enjoyed the blog today, children always make me happy. I especially enjoyed the story and picture of the Mainse kids with Jubilee’s offspring. You David and Norma Jean were and are wonderful examples to your family.
We had horses on the farm my dad used for plowing the fields and haying in the summer as well as any other chores the horses could be put to. Never could afford a tracktor. How wonderful for children to be raised with animals and learn to manage and respect them.
Israel truly does belong to Jews.
Love the pic of the dancers.
Blessings dear bloggers.
This is very enlightening.

Very interesting Linda
Good morning everyone. Hope you are having a blessed day. This morning’s reading was very interesting. I am currently reading a book by rabbi Johnathan Cahn about the “Shemita” (Jubilee Years). Apparently this year (Sept 14 to Sept 15) is a Jubilee year or Shemita Year, and he has some interesting predictions based on prior Jubilee Years, or Shemita Years. Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving!
What an amazing and scary link you sent, Lynda. Thank you.
You’re most welcome Doreen. I’m so tired of having my head in the sand.
Blessings.
What a beautiful story about the pony
Thanks Reynold for that photo of the dancers in flight, praising the Lord!!!
Great picture of “Jubilee” with the children…how precious, thank you David, and I sang with the Jubilee singers…Thank you for giving us the opportunity to rejoice with you.
Having grown up on the farm, although I left home when I was 15…I remember the land that was know as “summer fallow” nothing was sown on it. Although I did not know at that time the reason for it, that it needed a time of rest.
I have found since that we too need a season of rest…perhaps that is why we have the four season…winter is a great time to rest…as nature does.
from my comment yesterday, I still feel very uneasy about this chapter also, thankful for a nice prayer service today, my friend Sheila is with the Lord now, pray for her family, she went through alot and God has something great in store for the family! Pray for Devon yound husband soon to be a father AND HE WANTS TO QUIT SMOKING! please pray that strong smells come to him and it will cause him not to touch a smoke every again!!!! Praise the Lord. He took smokes/alcohol away from me 20 years ago, I am so very thankful, and no cravings. PRAISE THE LORD!
I’m glad I do this study, right now as I mentioned things are uneasy…please pray that the Lord will clear things up, He knows what I am praying for, I really need an increase in income to get things organized and cleared up. I just want to serve others, help my neighbour, and swim and talk to people. In Christ’s Name I pray AMEN and thank you for your prayers.
If I remember correctly from our trip to Israel, that they have a variation of the year of jubulie where property ownership is returned to Israel on the 50th year
Marvin
p.s. the closest version of the year of jubulie we have in individulical north america is we first purchase our homes around age 25 or 30 then keep them for 50 years until age 75 or 80 then sell them to pay for our nursing homes
