Key Verses: 1 Kings 15:11 & 14b

Asa did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, as did his father David……Asa’s heart was loyal to the Lord all his days.

Here’s some encouragement for us all. While kings who did evil in God’s eyes came and went with frequency in the northern 10 tribes, now called Israel, Asa, King of Judah, remained constant for 41 years. Character, formed by a rock-solid determination to always do what is right, will win in the long run. Often there are difficult times for the person who fervently desires to please the Lord, and sometimes it seems that a short cut would be advantageous, but we must resist. We need to ask God to harden our backbones, keeping us upright in all our decisions and deeds.

What a marked contrast between Asa in the south and Ahab in the north. “Ahab did evil in the sight of the Lord more than all who were before him” (1 Kings 16:30). Nevertheless, God had a plan! We are about to witness the arrival of a firebrand preacher in the north by the name of Elijah.

PRAYER FOR TODAY:

Lord, someone asked, “Where is the God of Elijah?” The answer came back, “He’s waiting for an Elijah to call on Him!” I’m calling on You, Lord God! Others are calling on You! I pray that You will continue to show Yourself strong through me and others. In the Name of Someone greater than Elijah, the Lord Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen!!!!!

100 PERSONAL WORDS:

The character of our political leaders is so very important (Asa and Ahab). Our second Canadian Prime Minister, The Rt. Hon. Alexander Mackenzie, was solidly converted to Christ back in Scotland before he came to Canada. As our first Leader of Canada’s Loyal Opposition, he was involved in the negotiations with Britain for our peaceful separation from political and economic control. I’ve had the privilege to lecture on Mackenzie’s life to political parties; I extolled the virtues of this man before the Law Society of Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Here’s just one story about this godly leader.

Prime Minister Mackenzie arrived at his office at 7:00 a.m. each morning. The Prophet Daniel, Mackenzie’s political hero, prayed with his window open each day (Daniel 6:10-13). Mackenzie, with the door open and on his knees, would pray out loud for God’s blessings on Canada for a new day. This was repeated at noon and again before he left for home at 7:00 in the evening. His staff, who were expected to arrive before him in the morning and leave after him at night, would gather around the door to listen to the Prime Minister pray. All Canadians need to know that this may be one of the main reasons why Canada has been blessed so greatly.

Yours for living “right in the eyes of the Lord,”

David

Rt. Hon. Alexander Mackenzie, 1822-1892, Canada’s second Prime Minister from 1873-1878.

  1. We need an Alexander MacKenzie again. May the Spirit he had come upon our PM and his advisors. God bless Canada and bring revival to our land. Open our eyes, Lord. We want to see Jesus. Amen

    • Yes, praise and thank God for praying leaders!
Mr. MacKenzie is not the only person as Prime Minister to pray!
This is one story that got published, but many other people who were Prime Ministers have prayed! Many have attended churches in their communities!
Other MLA’s go to church, some lead a Bible Study! Alberta had a Premier who was a preacher and elected as a Premier! Mr. Manning was his name and his program was on the radio! He was a Christian! I recall he used to travel throughout the province of Alberta talking to the people and he helped my dad one afternoon and then we had a bit to eat! He was an honorable man! the Province and the people prospered under his leadership! THank you Lord!

my birthday May 6th, I pray the Lord will bless me abundantly and I will be able to clear my debts and help family/friends/invest some for a better income Thank You Lord for all the blessings of this day amen

  2. Thank you Pastor David for this history lesson. O Lord, that you would raise up another praying. God fearing Prime Minister like Alexander McKenzie over our great nation Canada.

  3. I think you would like the Christian Heritage Party of Canada.
They are like overseers and don’t run candidates in ridings
that have a Pro-Life anti abortion Conservative running.
    And help those Conservative candidates.

  4. I learned something powerful about the Prime Minister Mckenzie. Praise be to God for a praying leader of our country and that all our leaders would follow this example!

  5. Now that is an inspiration–Asa, as King of Judah, and PM Alexander McKenzie–truly faithful servants and leaders for the Lord! Holding you in prayer, this morning, dear David. Stay safe, dearest saints, in the blessed rain!

Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. John 5:24 ESV

  6. Yes, Beverlee – having Asa come on the scene as King is like a breath of spiritual fresh-air, a bright light in the midst of a lot of darkness. What courage and commitment in the Name of the Lord throughout his years.

Thank you David for the story of the Rt. Hon. Alexander McKenzie. Can you imagine the media response. He would be laughed out of office. But, truly, more than ever we need to pray for our leaders who carry great burdens…walk huge tight ropes…but this 2nd Prime Minister, what courage and example.

Wonderful how his staff stood at the door and listened to him pray. In the heart of hearts of people…there is a hunger…”O God, let my life cultivate a hunger in the lives of people around me..His Spirit helping me and working out his Divine Purpose….fire us up like Elijah of old…”

Really praying about who to vote for in the coming Conservative Leadership.
It is so important to get the right person in for all of Canada, someone who holds forth strong christian principles and will take a stand….and yet be sensitive and tolerant as they minister to all Canadians…

    • ask those who are running for office what they believe! Ask them if they go to church, do they pray, find out everything about them before hand, tell them that it is important to have someone with Christian values running for office!
often times Christians never voice their Christian beliefs! We have that responsibility…blessings to all

  7. Praying for you David. Be encouraged, strengthened and filled with peace. Jesus said: .”My Peace I give to you, not as the world gives do give I to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid”. John 14:27 (NKJV)
